Story
Talking about death and dying is considered taboo in polite company, and even in the medical field. Our ideas about dying are confusing at best: Will our memories flash before our eyes? Regrets consume our thoughts? Does a bright light appear at the end of a tunnel? For most people, it will be a slower process, one eased with preparedness, good humor, and a bit of faith. At the forefront of changing attitudes around palliative care is hospice nurse Hadley Vlahos, who shows that end-of-life care can teach us just as much about how to live as it does about how we die.

Your body is incredible, but it’s also out to destroy you. Your brain is like an early computer operating system, riddled with bad code, slow to load, and more likely to watch cat memes than go to sleep. You’d be a mess without your skeleton, but it can be a bony cage if you’re tortured by backaches, niggling neck pain, and knee joints that crumble under pressure. And your nose is a design disaster, getting blocked, springing leaks, and growing random tufts of hair.

Story
Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross created her classic seminal work, On Death and Dying, to offer us a new perspective on the terminally ill. It is not a psychoanalytic study, nor is it a "how-to" manual for managing death. Rather, it refocuses on the patient as a human being and a teacher, in the hope that we will learn from him or her about the final stages of life.

As the American-born daughter of immigrants, Dr. Sunita Puri knew from a young age that the gulf between her parents' experiences and her own was impossible to bridge, save for two elements: medicine and spirituality. Interweaving evocative stories of Puri's family and the patients she cares for, That Good Night is a stunning meditation on impermanence and the role of medicine in helping us to live and die well, arming listeners with information that will transform how we communicate with our doctors about what matters most to us.

Critic reviews
“For those of you not planning on living forever, here’s the book for you. For so many reasons, we humans love to mystify death, shrouding the dying process and making it only more difficult to imagine and, in turn, more difficult to traverse. Nurse Julie has the prescription. Here you’ll find all sorts of practical information, from notes on morphine to how a body winds down, all wrapped in easy and clear language. If this sounds scary or grave, don’t worry. Nurse Julie will be right there with you, and she'll introduce you to some beautiful souls along the way.”—BJ Miller, author of A Beginner’s Guide to the End
“There’s a reason we don’t like talking about death: it’s scary. It’s overwhelming. But just because we don’t like talking about it doesn’t mean we don’t have questions. Get the guidance and reassurance you need from someone who lives dying every single day—Hospice Nurse Julie. Julie McFadden’s Nothing to Fear is the helpful, thoughtful, knowledgeable guide you deserve as you explore what it means to face the end.”—Megan Devine, author of It’s OK That You’re Not OK
“Comforting and enlightening, pragmatic and fearless, Julie gives us the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth to care for the people we most love when it matters most."—Steve Leder, New York Times bestselling author of The Beauty of What Remains and For You When I Am Gone

The MANipulator manual. Keep your man interested and begging for more without playing games. So many women get in trouble in their love lives, and 99.9 percent of that trouble could have been avoided if they'd said "Well, f**k him!" a bit more often. Too many women are way too nice and compliant to their men, especially when these men don't deserve that kind of treatment. I, as a dating coach and author of books for women who want to get men, cannot take it anymore.

Wonderful
I've worked in healthcare 46 years, mostly working with the elderly in both a hospital & nursing home setting. This book wonderfully tells what death & dying is. This knowledge is so helpful to families & the patient. It is spot on to the experiences I've witnessed. she also taught me some things that will better help me as I continue to work in the healthcare world. Thank you for sharing your wisdom, your stories and demestifying death.

I absolutely loved this book. I plan to recommend it to everyone that I know.
When my husband was dying, while he was dying, and then after he died, everything’s was a blur and I felt so many conflicting things that I couldn’t put into words.
This truly helped me make sense of it all.
I plan to reread it several times!

This has been very helpful to listen to as a Hospice Nurse. It was referred to me from a family member who told me he understood the dying process better because he read the book & took in the information & he said it gave him peace. I wish I had had this to listen to when my Dad was dying.

Nurse Julie has really done a fantastic job with this book, and I hope she writes more! It was so well-written: clear, concise, easy to understand and interesting. Her performance was just as great, which really made me want to keep listening. The topic is SO IMPORTANT and she has truly done it the justice it deserves. This is a MUST READ!
