Publisher's summary

They were only kids when they met for the first time. Leo Mancini was the son of a judge. Roman Cipriani the son of a criminal. So different, yet as they shared stolen kisses and secret moments, they fell in love. One day they would run away together, have the future they deserved, because no one loved Leo like Roman did, or Roman like Leo did. But before they could make their dreams come true, their future was viciously stolen and their lives changed forever.

Roman has spent the last 12 years repressing the trauma in his past, trying to pretend it didn't exist, until even he believed his own lies.

Leo won't let himself forget what happened because he doesn't ever want to be that person again. He won't become the man his father wanted him to be or the guy who gets hurt when he lets someone in.

But in that split second when their eyes meet again, everything changes. Despite Leo's anger and Roman's denial, the connection they shared as teens is still there, too powerful to deny. Now, when their moments don't have to be stolen, they cling to what they've always craved - each other.

Roman and Leo aren't kids anymore, though - they can't lock themselves away from the world and pretend nothing exists but each other. A trauma like Roman suffered doesn't just go away, but now that Roman accepts his truth, can the two of them escape their demons before they destroy Roman and Leo a second time?

Contains mature themes.

phenomenal

I will start by saying that I don't usually gravitate toward angsty books. But ....Riley Hart has written this story so well that I have spent much of the last few hours crying my dang eyes out listening to it. And yet, I love it so much. I would actually like to know more about how Roman and Leo work things out. Does Roman ever have a relationship with Anthony? So many questions. That's why it gets 5 stars from me.

Emotionally Exhausting...

I am a Riley Hart fan, but this one didn’t work for me. It’s intense, and throughout the entire book Roman and Leo both worry internally that they are not going to be together. There are some nice moments, and it seems obvious they are meant to be together, but for me it was painful to have continual angst throughout the book. I did really like the encounter at the end that precipitated Roman’s finally confronting his issues, and the epilogue was emotional but the best part of the book. Overall the book was too difficult to get through, but if you like an intense story with serious emotional issues for both MCs to work though, this might be a good book for you.

Profound

I think it was written very well but I would warn that if you struggle with trauma from on a from of sexual abuse or a hate crime that there may be a trigger in here.

Heartfelt

The story was so deep. I appreciated it because it was glimpse on what people who identify as LGBTQ have to face. I like the realness of their story and that it wasn’t just about the long lasting attraction between two men. I cried a couple times.
Thank you for that.

Heavy on the angst

Generally Riley Hart books have a bit more levity. Not this one. It’s really good. Great characters and development. But man it was serious.

Emotionally Heavy

This book was by far the most emotionally challenging I have read in years, however Riley did an exceptional job of presenting the hardships, difficulties, and anguish of our LGBTQ citizens, thank you for bringing these problems to the surface for all to appreciate, and be empathetic with. I love this book and it’s characters, let’s all take notice, love and understanding is the answer.

Beautiful story

Leo and Roman broke my heart and I loved every minute of it. And I swear I love any book the Joel Leslie narrates.

Relevant story line and love that meant to be

It’s not my favourite due to the fact that the story line circles around the past which is realistic but not always written realistically for me. Either do more and do it fully or less. I by accident skipped 10 min and couldn’t be bothered to rewind. Wasn’t worried I miss something as it was quite repetitive. And even the brother story line was not a surprise.
But altogether a love story that shows you can meet the one early and even if you change - he is still the one.
Joel Lesley as always needs a bit getting used to sue to his voice vibrations but I actually enjoyed him reading the characters.
