Critic reviews

"Robinson’s latest reads like a video game with tons of action and lots of carnage....Gruesome and nasty in a good way, this will appeal to readers of Matthew Reilly." ( Booklist)

Cool - or cheesy?

The coolest thing about this book was the concept that the plot is built upon. I found the Greek mythology connection wrapped in modern technology fascinating, and it kept me reading even when parts got slow. Ironically, what I thought would appeal to me most about this book - the elite team - was what least impressed me. Their introduction scene seemed especially cheesy, and while some of the interactions were better than others, the team dynamics left me wanting a lot more. I did think the end was worth the read as well.

I also have to say that the narrator had way too much of a Jack Nicholson style for me, and took me a long time to get used to. The style also seemed a bit overly cheesy and self-important. But if you like Nicholson, or are enraptured by the drama and action of this book, you'll probably think it's fine.

I got this as a bargain book -- and I think it was worth that, but I'm not sure if I would use a whole credit on it. In fact, I am on the fence about continuing the series. When I finished it, I thought I would get the 2nd one, but the scenario for the 2nd one sounds SO SIMILAR to this one that I wasn't very interested. The third book in the series sounds more appealing. I think I'll put the series on my long list for other things to read. I have a few others that are more appealing.

Great, leaves you craving more.

A fantastic story of teamwork, friendship, myth and legends. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat, unable to turn off until the end and still wanting more. Every time I hear a book narrated by Jeffrey Kafer I think it is his best work and this was no different, he is awesome.

Underlying story not bad, but very campy

The underlying premise of the story is intriguing but the characters are about as deep as a kiddie pool. Has a very campy feel to it as the chesty couldn't be more cliché.

All that being said I'm tempted to listen to the next one.

Good Start

New series for me, really enjoyed this book and looking forward to starting the next one.

People are giving the narrator a bad review, but I thought he did the job right, not perfect, but I still enjoyed the book.

I liked the focus on all the characters rather than just one, really enjoyed that and can't wait to learn more about Chess team.

Got to know about this series from a Joe Ledger book.

A crazy action thrill ride

Having read a few books by Jeremy Robinson I thought I had an inking for the style of the book this might be, but I was wrong. This thing is an action story on steroids, it starts fast and doesn't let up. I enjoyed the story and the frenetic pacing and it was a hell of a ride and fun first outing for a series. Jeffrey Kafer is enjoyable in narrating and acting out the cast of heroes and villains in this book. There might not be the most character development or completely realized heroes, but it is only because there is non-stop momentum in the story and the set pieces. It is a great ride that starts with a bang and doesn't let off till the very end.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

No spoilers

Excellent as usual from this author/narrator pair…..except pronunciation….Heckler & Koch…rhymes with smoke NOT scotch!!! The narrator pronounces it this way in everything I’ve heard from him. Very distracting!

STRONG STORY TEPID NARRATION

Not as strong as Joe Ledger series and narrator lacks drama and vocal variety .

Was hoping for more

I was excited for this book but found my attention wandering and was able to predict the twists. I had a hard time with the reader too, there was very little difference between characters as he was reading. I am going to try book 2, see if it gets better.
