About this listen

America's best soldiers are about to discover the deadly secret behind one of history's greatest mysteries…

When a raid on an insurgent safehouse reveals a clue to decoding the world's most mysterious manuscript—and possibly a recipe for creating the ultimate weapon of mass destruction—Delta operator Jack Sigler must forge a new black ops team to avert catastrophe, a team of deadly warriors with dangerous secrets—the Chess Team.

But nothing is what it seems… and no one can be trusted. As the search for the truth about the manuscript moves across Asia and into the darkest reaches of human history, the Chess Team will have to battle enemies beyond comprehension—nightmare creatures of myth and perverse creations of science—to preserve a secret as old as life itself.

In 2009, New York Times and #1 Audible bestselling author Jeremy Robinson launched the adventures of Jack Sigler and the Chess Team. Now, learn how it all began!

Military Sci-fi. more military than sci-fi

I liked the science fiction part but there wasn't enough. If you're into all the excruciating detail of guns, ammunition and ops strategies, well this book is for you. If you prefer more sci-fi details, take a pass. I also found the characters and story predictable. I fast forwarded through much of this thinking there has to be more. I like this author overall, but will think twice before getting another title from him.

Jeremy Robinson delivers again. I love the intertwining of ancient myth and modern science.

Love the story! Somebody tell Jeff that carbine is pronounced "car-bean". That is all. Carry on

Queen

King & Queen relationship. Bishop's character. The Frankensreins. The weird creatures at the zoo seemed uncessary.

Origin story

I’ve only listened to one other Chess Team book (so far) but I can imagine this “Book 0” offering will be a kick in the pants for long time fans. Seeing how the team develops, having well-known and beloved characters arrive on stage from separate origins and coming together to form the beginnings of a family… that’s pure gold.
We were well into the story before any SF or supernatural stuff showed up, but show up it did and things got wild. This was a fun, fast read and I highly recommend it.

The person that narrated has a cadence that I cannot get used too.

Not a terrible story. Just not very exciting. Predictable and lackluster. I’m sure the writer will improve over the years.

The Plot is Fun the Narrator is Awful.

I love woo woo, so I loved the plot. Occasionally, though, I was convinced that Mr. Robinson read a series by another author that I listen to and just copied whole parts of those books. The narrator was SO awful that I occasionally got lost as to who was actually speaking. His accents (oh wait, the ONE accent he did) was horrible. It would have been better if he'd literally just READ the book instead of trying to narrate it. He mispronounced so many words it was crazy.

Great blend of action and science fiction.

Looking forward to listening to the second book in this series. Plenty of believable scenarios.
