Publisher's summary

When the deck is stacked against you, the only way to win is to break the game.

Phac has saved the forest but lost much in the progress. When he finally reaches the city of Salom, he thinks it's time to rest and regroup. But the world does not play fair. Corrupt authorities hide in the shadows. Devils roam the darkness. Danger lurks in every home.

Phac will oppose the enemy for honor and revenge. He will make allies, even friends, and set out to infiltrate one of the city's largest establishments while growing stronger every day. Unfortunately, the enemy is always a step ahead. Personal struggles expand into full-scale battles.

In the end, when all seems lost, victory can only be achieved through the most unexpected, wholesome allies....

A step down from book 1

A big part of the likability of book 1 was its unique storyline mixed with quirkiness, zany reactions and the interesting cast of characters. There is a strong vein of social justice motivating the MC which places the unpredictable MC on the right side of the protagonist scale and that is still a primary element in book 2. However, even given those positive influences, book 2 suffers from a sense of predictability trending towards formulaic. There also is the overuse of stats-bane which forces me to over use the fast-forward button.

Daniel Wisniewski's performance still makes for a pleasurable listening experience.
