Publisher's summary

Deserts. Rogues. A secret hidden in an underground maze.

Every moment counts as Volke Savan races south to the city of New Norra. His goal: find Theasin Venrover, the famous artificer who may have a cure for the arcane plague. Separated from most of the Frith Guild - and even his sister - Volke must rely on the crew of the airship Sun Chaser to help him find Theasin in time.

To complicate matters, the desert city of New Norra is steeped in mystery, and the massive maze under the streets could potentially solve all of Volke’s problems. With hunters after him, and dread pirates in the port, Volke finds himself forced to choose between equally terrible options.

She did it again!

Such an amazing story, I'm already dying for the next to come out!
I'm loving everything this series has to offer, and the character development is pretty nice to see.

more of a rant than review, spoilers ahead beware

Definitely YA and frustrating. It's bad enough that the kids are unable to properly process things but the adults are just as bad. Zelphry is an awful friend. Say what you will about Calisto and his bad deeds but before all that, he did everything for Zelphry. He was an great life and death friend and he asked for one thing only. He asked for help from Zelphry alone and it actually wouldn't hurt a large guild like the frith guild at all, but Zelphry there him away with no hesitation. As much as I want to hate Calisto it's all on Zelphry. I actually felt it was sickening that the author tried so hard to justify Zelphrys reasoning. He could've easily chosen to help Calisto for a couple years without using a frith member as bait. The key point would've been his willingness to actually help Calisto but Zelphry in all honesty basically threw him in the trash as if he no longer mattered. Seriously, if Zelphry is still young like volke I can understand his selfishness. His choice to go after the plague ended up in failure obviously and he helped create one of the worst pirates. This all lies on Zelphry and his selfishness. There's a lot of ways to compromise and Calisto sounded all he wanted was support. Awful friendships like this can often leave one to resort to desperate measures. I've yet to finish the book with about 2hrs left but as much as I want Calisto dead, and as much as I like Zelphry, I hope they both die. Calisto's story is more of a tragedy than Zelphry's. Calisto had nothing other than his so called friends, whereas Zelphry was accepted into a good guild and meet friends and accomplices. And author, please don't try to force horrible opinions onto the readers like Zelphry unwilling to compromise slightly to help his friend once in his life and make it feel like Calisto is the worst person in the world. People grow and change depending on how they're treated. And in all honesty, Zelphry used Calisto and treated him awfully. The only bad thing Zelphry didn't do too him was physically abuse and harass him. But mentally, Zelphry destroyed that last good heartedness out of Calisto. If the world wasn't interesting I would've dropped this already but there magic system and creatures keep me in.

Best one yet.

Starts off slow, but the ending is well worth the wait. Shami is an amazing author and Brian gives the perfect performance necessary to bring this story to life.

Slow start, Fantastic finish

I have read/listened to hundreds of novels throughout my life. Of all the authors that I have enjoyed, only J.R.R Tolkein and Jim Butcher rank higher. I have really enjoyed this series of books and can't wait to start the next one.

Well worth the wait

Step aside Kvothe, a real hero is here.

Volke’s journey leads him through deserts skies and the past to discover inner truths about himself. And setting up for an epic quest yet to come. If you have read up to Coliseum Arcanist idk why you are reading my review when you could be reading this masterpiece.
