About this listen

#1 New York Times Bestseller

Set during Powerless, fan-favorite Adena gets a story all her own in this unique special edition of the runaway hit! This deluxe format includes Powerless trivia and quizzes!

Adena and Paedyn have always been inseparable. Fate brought them together when they were young, but friendship ensured they would always protect each other and the home they built in the slums of Loot. But now Paedyn—an Ordinary—has been selected for the Purging Trials, which means almost certain death.

Now alone in Loot, Adena must fend for herself. After attempting to steal, she’s rescued by a mysterious man from the market. Mak’s shadowy past and secretive power set him apart from the other low-level Elites of Loot. And as the pair team up to see their loved ones before the Trials, the quest tests their loyalty, their love, and their lives.

I literally knew what was gonna happened. It has been 20 mins and I am still crying at work. My poor A & Mak 🤍

I haven’t stopped crying

I did a hybrid read with the audio. The audio cast did a good job.

Event though I knew what was coming this is like THE BEST NOVELA I HAVE EVER READ! . Lauren does slow burns really well. This book had me tearing up. I do have some thoughts on the ending but it was a really good book regardless. Love Lauren’s writing style. This book had so many good quotes! We got to know Adena more and come to a better understanding with her story. I did feel more for her in this book than I did in powerless since we only got a glimpse of her in that book. We got a glimpse at Kitt and Kai in this book too and made us have more of an understanding of how they felt for Pae. The fact that she met Mak surprised me because I never knew she was seeing someone during powerless.

This book had me sobbing. Even worst when Makoto's voice actor also started to tear up.
Just amazing

I loved Powerless and Fearless. LOVED. Was actually blown away by how much I loved them. That said, though I knew how Powerful would end, I expected that storyline to be a bit more entwined with the main arc of resistance, court dynamics, etc. I know it’s a novella about two other protagonists, but it felt really separate even though A and P are so close in the first book, and at the end I found myself asking whyyyy I put myself through the pain! I finished the book both frustrated and sad, which probably means it’s written well enough that I should rate it higher. So take this review with a grain of salt— I’m in mourning. Here’s hoping Book 4 gives me some closure, ha!

Salty heartbreak

Am I the only one disappointed that this book was about Adena instead of Pay? The romance in this book also developed way too fast to be believable to me, and there was so much non-closure in the end.

Good, but not as good as the other books

I read the 2nd book first and knowing what happens made this book all the more powerful. I thought the ending wouldn’t affect me as much since I knew what was coming but alas, my heart ached!

EXCELLENT!!!!

Powerful is a gripping and emotionally charged read that effortlessly blends humor, action, and heart-wrenching twists. From the very first page, the story pulls you into its world through the eyes of Adena and Mak, whose dynamic and evolving relationship provides both comedic relief and deep emotional resonance.

One of the novel’s greatest strengths is its immersive storytelling. Experiencing events directly through the characters' perspectives makes every moment feel personal, heightening both the excitement and the heartbreak. The witty banter between Adena and Mak keeps the pace lively, adding levity to the intense plot, while their growing bond is both endearing and believable.

And then comes the twist—an ending that is as powerful as it is devastating. Just when you think you've figured out where the story is heading, Powerful delivers an emotional gut punch that lingers long after the final page. The sadness of the reveal makes the journey even more profound, leaving readers with a mix of admiration and heartache.

This book is impossible to put down, blending action and emotion in a way that keeps you hooked from start to finish. Whether you love surprising plot twists or characters who feel undeniably real, Powerful is an unforgettable read that will stay with you.

Powerful

There are so many sentences that were changed or left out completely. While passages read aloud that aren’t in the book itself. The story was incredible but I couldn’t get over the missing or changed sentences.

Loved it but

The female narrator doesn’t switch her tone of voice when speaking as a man so I got lost a few times in the dialogue. The male narrator is very robotic sounding. The story is creative and heartwarming but very predictable. It was not long enough for much character development. It’s fun to get Adeenas cheery viewpoints.

Very predictable but cute
