Story
Education can be transformed if we eradicate our fixation on big data like standardized test scores as the supreme measure of equity and learning. Instead of the focus being on “fixing” and “filling” academic gaps, we must envision and rebuild the system from the student up—with classrooms, schools and systems built around students’ brilliance, cultural wealth, and intellectual potential. Street data reminds us that what is measurable is not the same as what is valuable and that data can be humanizing, liberatory and healing.

Story
We need a fundamental shift in our values—a pivot in how we think, act, work, and connect. Despite what we’ve been told, the most critical mainspring of social change isn’t coalition building or problem analysis. It’s healing: deep, whole, and systemic, inside and out. Here, Shawn Ginwright, PhD, breaks down the common myths of social movements—a set of deeply ingrained beliefs that actually hold us back from healing and achieving sustainable systemic change.

The Writing Revolution (TWR) provides a clear method of instruction that you can use no matter what subject or grade level you teach. The model, also known as The Hochman Method, has demonstrated, over and over, that it can turn weak writers into strong communicators by focusing on specific techniques that match their needs and by providing them with targeted feedback. Insurmountable as the challenges faced by many students may seem, TWR can make a dramatic difference.

When I saw this was only 2.5 hours, I felt kind of ripped off. But the content in this book is very concise and easy to use. I realize now that he said exactly what he needed to say to get us going, and didn't fill five more hours with useless fluff. I'm glad I took a chance on this book.

Sound Advice
I teach at an early college high school that already is immersed in PBL, so I really loved the inclusion of "Fail" and "Win" examples. I'll be taking a lot of these ideas to my classroom and will definitely be sharing with my principal and colleagues.

To the Point! Lots of tips and info.
I like how concise and to the point this author was. He touched on all the factors and strategies related to setting up a PBL environment. I highly recommend this book to all teachers. Read til the end. He lists some helpful tips for introducing PBL like starting with a growth mindset discussion/Ted talk.
