Publisher's summary

Back in Ellsworth High there was definitely no one weirder than Melvin. All the kids made fun of the way he dressed, the way he acted, everything about him. Vicki was the only one who stood up for him, but even she was horrified when he dug up a dead body and tried to bring it back to life with power from a car battery. That was years ago, but Vicki still has nightmares about Melvin. Now she's back in Ellsworth and she knows she'll have to see Melvin again. He's just been released from the institution and he's acting even weirder than ever. His experiments with the dead have progressed, and as soon as he can get Vicki where he wants her, he can make his most twisted dream a reality.

Richard Laymon is one of my favorite horror authors. You should definately check out this and the rest of his books.

Great Classic Horror!

Story 4/5
Narration 5/5

Melvin is crazy. Melvin can also resurrect dead people to do his nefarious deeds. But Melvin has a problem: what to do with them when he's through?

Recommended for a fun, 80's style horror

Didn’t like the ending

This is not one of Laymon’s finest works. While it was entertaining, the ending was lackluster and anticlimactic (unless I missed something). The narration was subpar but not to the point of unlistenable. If interested in a Laymon novel, I’d skip this one and try some of his other stories.

If you're a woman, you might want to pass

*SPOILERS AHEAD!*

This is the first book I've read from this author, so I don't know if this is a "thing" with him. I'm hoping not because some of his other titles look interesting. My biggest issue with this book: I'm so fucking tired of male authors making female main characters look like dumb bitches. Is it because they don't know real women? Is it because it's easier to check those plot points off the list when idiot females can just trip and fall into them?

How Vicky became a doctor, I will never know. She's a weak character from the start and every time she tries to be firm or stand up for herself, it amounts to nothing more than a tantrum. Her decisions rarely make sense. When she accurately jumps to a conclusion, it feels ridiculous because she has exhibited no common sense leading up to such a conclusion. It was impossible to feel bad for her or even understand her.

She does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to save herself and don't even get me started on the ending. It completely disqualifies this book as horror and makes it a soap opera. I'm so glad Vicky got her happy ending while other people are still getting killed because of her.

The narration was just as bad, possibly worse. Sir. Not everything needs to be a sarcastic joke. Not ALL of the female characters have to be portrayed as bimbos or bitches. If I hated the characters in text, I hated them even more after listening to them portrayed in such a consistently offensive manner. Mostly the women.

What a disappointment.

Nope

I love horror but couldn't get past chap. 4 of this book, even after FFW through those chapters. It's violent perv/porn horror. From the descriptions of his other books, I wonder if Laymon was an incel or wrote for that audience.

Don't waist your hard earned money!

The idea of the story had something worth thinking about. The actual story here is awful and disgusting. Not a horror story, more of a lustful zombie that actual got to screw! ugh! yuck! gross! Not even funny! Thankfully I won't be reading anymore from this author!

Meh...

I guess I expected less summertime memories more action. I couldn't even finish this one. I was just bored.

Not for me

This story was so far out there I was bored. Stephen King may enjoy it, but for me it was a big snore
