About this listen

A man trapped in a live-streamed reality dungeon crawl battles monsters for his life—and for the fate of the world—in this fantasy for fans of Squid Game.

Jason Lee came to New York City to see the sights. But his plans quickly change when the Apocalypse Protocol is initiated. Rifts open across the Earth, unleashing hordes of monsters upon humanity. But gateways to dungeons also appear and, with them, opportunity.

Finally, there's a system announcement: some individuals will be bestowed with powers and abilities to combat the monsters and protect their fellow humans. And when a dungeon materializes in Times Square, causing gargoyles to attack the streets of Manhattan, Jason discovers he's one of the Awakened—and he's live streaming to a global audience!

Now, viewers cheer Jason on as he competes in a high-stakes battle for survival. The more he fights, the more he can level up and adapt. With the help of online admirers and the minions at his command, he might just be able to rise above the competition and cement his status as the Strongest Sovereign . . .

One thing is certain: Jason's vacation is definitely over.

Great story

I loved this book. It was a great adventure. I loved the story and characters. It was evenly paced and kept my attention the whole way through. Can't wait to start the second book. As always Todd Haberkorn's performance was a A+. I love the different voices he uses. It gives the story life. He is so talented. Books are even better when he voices them.

it was well performed.

the story overall is good. It seems like the author ran through the book quickly it is missing a lot of context and clarity. the leveling system is super sporadic.

Idea of a good story

It felt like a robot wrote thìs I. pre-ordered. Because my favorite VA this that entire being the only enjoyment I got from this book. There is basically no world building at all. Who is anybody? What are the motivation? None of it is planned out. I'm almost to the end with 1 hour left. And I have no idea what the portagonist's first name is.. Does he have a family's or what is the fighting for is there a goal at the end? The Apocalypse is happening and absolutely no one questioning Anything.it's just another day at the office.
This work might have done better as a visual novel or maybe a Manga. It's really a shame because there is a story there. The action scenes are detailed and well-thought-out. The dialogue is not too terrible. But it's so dry a and on a feeling in the Telly.

everything but the narrator sucked. not worth the time to elaborate really. all the characters are at best 2 dimensional.

incredibly childish writing with no backstory

First of all, I want to say congrats to the author for writing a book. That being said, it seems to have been written with a chatbot AI and touched up by the author. If this is the case or not, I don't know. What I do know is that there is literally zero backstory given. At the end of the book, I am not sure what motivates the MC. Many things are not explained at all, including how people found the MC's livestream, a major plot point. I am not sure what the MC's name is. While they call him Jason, I think, it is never explained if this is a nickname, pseudonym, or his real name. The reason why this is an issue, is because many of the people the MC interacts with are on his livestream and use a pseudonym. There is no mention of if the MC has friends, family, significant other, etc. It never even made it clear if he was just visiting New York or actually lives there. What makes me think it is the former, is because he will just curl up and sleep wherever he finds himself instead of going to his home.

He is pushed into a life and death game, but does nothing to test the boundaries of his class. Further, leveling and the rewards that come with it seem arbitrary. There is nothing to indicate level progression such as it takes X amount of experience to get to level Y. We are just told he gains 1 level, he gains 2 levels, etc.

I have never felt 7 hours drag on longer than listening to this book. It took me about 2 weeks to finish this. The narrator makes it better, but there is only so much that can be done.

Somehow this was just a hard to listen to

Usually these kinds of books are just what I like. Except this book. I am not sure of it is the phasing, the dynamic or the writing style but after going through more than half the book in a couple of tries I am giving up.

I have taken multiple breaks and seriously given it a chance as I have found diamonds in the slog before... But this time I gave up.

Look at this as a warning or a challenge to finish what I gave up on. I wish you a happy reading.

Trash

Absolutely no meaningful world building or motivation from the start. Sounds like the work of a trash tier AI.
