Publisher's summary

A standalone novel in the Sons of War contemporary military romance series.

Tormented by the loss of his men, Marine Corps Captain Sawyer Mathis returns home to attend a retreat for children who had lost a parent in war. He's forced to spend time with Katya Khavalov, the sister of one of the Marines killed during a firefight under his command. Unafraid of war or death, Sawyer is determined not to let a beautiful woman with a quick temper and broken heart deter him from trying to help her family heal.

Fiery yet sweet Katya resents the cool, unflappable commander. He brought one brother back in a box and the other dismembered. She blames him for destroying her family and believes him to be incapable of feeling anything - until she witnesses firsthand the toll the war and deaths are taking on Sawyer. He's suffering, too, and too stubborn to admit it.

The longer the two spend together, the more they begin to understand each other. What neither is counting on: the feelings they ignite within each other.

Great

Any additional comments?

This audiobook was given to me for a honest unbiased review. This was a great but emotional read. Losing a family member is hard, going through that grief in this book really is hard emotionally. However this does show that life does move on, that you can still grieve yet still fall in love.

Military romance at it's best!

I love military romance, and I found this story to have so many good elements, it was hard to stop listening. Sawyer Mathis comes back the US to bury one of his men, and meets the family. Little does he know how his life will change. Katya Khavalov is burying her brother, and help nursing her other brother back to health from this attack. Blaming Sawyer for all the misfortune is the easy way out. But circumstances bring the two together and as opposite as they are, get to see each other first hand dealing with things. Their banter back and forth is priceless, ramping up the attraction and heat while trying to deal with the pain. The emotions this book evokes are incredible. From helplessness and guilt to love and compassion, the feelings between Sawyer and Katya are many. The question comes to whether the two will be able to overcome their pasts and meld together. The infusion of the kids from camp is integral to the story, giving sides of both characters that would not have been seen otherwise. It also let us get to know Peter, Katya's brother a little while a stand alone novel makes you want to know more about him, picking up the next book in the series.

Narration by Katie Mills is enjoyable. She does the characterizations well, though at times it was hard to distinguish between her male voices. She has a good pace and her voice is smooth and pleasant.

A good read

This was a very enjoyable read for me. The two main characters were both head strong and had emotional scars they had to deal with. It is difficult to walk the mine field known as grief, then to try and throw love into the mix, well it can either be a complete disaster or it can be the best thing ever.

The first in Ford's Sons of War, but it does contain a HEA. I can't recommend this book enough for anyone who is looking for a thought provoking military romance.

Semper Mine Review...

Good military romance. Plot and writing were pretty decent. Narrator did a good job for all characters.

Semper Mine

At first I thought the story was pretty 2 dimensional. Typical opposites attract, but eventually it delved into more weighty topics & redeemed itself from being a simple bit of fluff. Overall, it was an enjoyable listen, but nothing to rave about. Imo.

just okay for me

Katya is young, headstrong and angry. Angry that the war has taken one of her brothers. Angry that the one man who was in charge of keeping him safe, failed to bring him home.

Sawyer is that man, angry with himself for not keeping his squad safe. Frustrated that this family that all should hate him has welcomed him into the family, well with the exception of Katya.

I have always been a die hard Lizzy Ford fan but I am struggling to love this contemporary story. I am not sure if it was the narrator in the audio that just left me wanting to choke the breath out of Katya or punch her in the throat every time she threw a jab at Sawyer. You could tell from the very beginning of the story that Sawyer was genuine and that he harbored a ton of guilt. The book gives you your HEA but this one was just okay for me.

A slow cozy burn filled with healing and warmth.

I actually listened to the second in this series before hearing this one. It was not my intention to go out of order, it just somehow happened. That being said, it makes no difference if you do the same as I because they each are stand alone novels. This story was raw and beautiful. A family dealing with loss and a man who has no family but sees his team as family, dealing with the same loss. Throw in the sister of the fallen hero blaming him for her brother's death and you have the beginning of a truly great story. Well worth a go.
Katie Mills does a great job with the narration. Her narration was smooth and seamless. She was very relatable

Great story line

I received this audiobook free for an honest review. I thought this was a great war story. The heartache in losing someone in the war and the injured that come home brings the reality of the casualties of war to the forefront. The author did a great job with the characters. Katya and Sawyer's characters are so realistic. The story has some minor twists and turns but ends on a good note. I have never read this author, but will look for additional books. Having never heard this narrator before, she did a good job.
