About this listen

In this prequel to Scratches, the members of Third Squad are sent on a recon mission to Northern Vietnam in 1967. Their squad leader, Sgt. George Hanscott, has to make the difficult decision to disobey his unit's direct orders, putting his squad's lives at risk, or help a local fishing village end the terror that's been plaguing them for over a century.

Will his decision backfire, or will his squad of US Marines be able to destroy the evil entity they don't quite understand? Will we find out how George became such a heinous monster? Do we really want to know?

Creepy

Great follow up/prequel for Scratches. I really like how Marsella connected the two stories but was able to give each of them their own feel and atmosphere.

Just wow!

I don't think I've ever started a novel feeling a certain way about a character, and then had that emotion flipped on its head, squished, and mashed up by the end of the book. I thought for sure I knew where I stood, but Joshua did an amazing job giving the back story of how George ended up the way he did, and I'm beyond impressed!

This book invoked the feels

This book made me so angry with the author......how dare you make me feel for the monster from your previous book. I kid. This was a great book 2 and really makes you understand some of the events in the first book. No where is book 3!!!!

Death in the jungle

“Walking in the dark was like the nervous anticipation you felt turning the crank on a Jack-in-the-box as a child, except so much worse.”
War is hell and Sargent George Hanscott makes you want to be in the thick of it with him. He is an honorable leader who makes the tough calls and silently antagonizes over possible mistakes. Grab your M4 and join the unit as you creep through the jungle searching for a monster that has been plaguing the village for a century. Feel the tension, hear the snap of branches under foot, smell the damp soil. On second thought, don’t smell the soil, stay away from the ground as much as you can.
If you’ve read SCRATCHES then you know that George becomes a different man. How does he get from here to the sinister old man he becomes?

An immersive horror experience in Vietnam

Prior to listening to this audiobook I had read the novel itself in ebook form. But the audio version adds a different dimension to it. The narrator does a great job! In the novel we follow a group of Marines in the in the jungles of Vietnam during the Vietnam war who encounter supernatural horrors there that they weren’t expecting when they went off to war. I definitely recommend this as a great audiobook listen!
