About this listen

When the bodies of two biker gang members are found, Detective David Wolf finds himself caught in a lethal environment, where truth comes at a price.

Two members of a ruthless biker gang called the Sons of the Void show up dead at a cabin in the woods, and Wolf and his team learn violence in a neighboring county has bled south into their jurisdiction. Despite the easily explainable crime, the brand new sheriff in office is hard-pressed to look active on the case and sends his ringer—Wolf—to northern Colorado to help investigate.

Unwanted and unwelcome by the locals, Wolf finds he’s plunged into a territory where fear and silence reign supreme, and as he unearths more details about the crime, learns there’s much more going on than meets the eye. More danger awaits, and not just for the criminals. Innocent lives are at stake, and the only man standing between them and certain doom is David Wolf.

The latest installment of the David Wolf mystery-thriller series takes the listener on an explosive adventure through the lung-pumping thin air of the mountain west, keeping you glued to the story until the final word.

*This book is the 18th in the series but can be listened to as a standalone novel.

Not having read the previous books, it worked as a stand alone. It would have been better if I'd known the back stories. I'll probably listen to them.

I really liked it

I always get so excited when another David Wolfe book pops into my feed, this had been a great read/listen.

One of my favorites!

The description made this book sound like it would be thrilling, but it was actually pretty dull. The narrator, tho talented when he chose to be, was very inconsistent with his voices. Half the time, it was so noticeable it drew me out of the story. For example, at the very end of the book when there is somebody in tears because he's about to die and has a gun to his head, he's just reading about it in a sing-song lackadaisical voice. That doesn't really inspire the listener to want to keep paying attention.

The biggest letdown was that I simply didn't care about the characters much. There's hardly any character development, and though I understand this is an entry many volumes deep into a series, it is still possible to write about familiar characters in a way that's compelling. For example, the Agent Pendergast series never fails to draw you in with odd character quirks and things that keep you interested in the main character, and I have listened to 25 of those books over the last year.

There was very little subtext underneath the plot and stakes. The only character who was a vaguely interesting was Mitch, the father whose daughter is kidnapped, and it's a stretch for me to say that because he and everybody else were just kind of one-note. Uninteresting characters are the book equivalent of eating dry white toast.

Unless you're a die-hard fan of this series I would give it a miss unless you need some fluff in the background while you're doing things like cleaning your house. I was really hoping for a juicy new series to sink my teeth into, but sadly didn't find it with this book.

mediocre action that never really takes off

The author is smart enough to know when to put this series on the daily deal to galvanize new listeners to buy the entire series.
The characters are evolving and if you did get this daily deal to get introduced to the series then yeah you do feel a little left out if you are new, but you get an introduction to the characters that are a family. The author also puts together sets which I love to take advantage of those box sets. I do like the narrator very much, but I have not investigated his other reads, which I will have to do after this daily deal.

Great daily deal to continue the series

Jeff never disappoints with his David Wolf series. Just as good as the rest of the books. Great story with the same interesting characters from the past. Looking forward to Yates coming back and joining the team in their next adventure. Narration, excellent as always.

Riveting!

Never dismiss a Detective and his criminal wisdom. Murder is not acceptable. Suspense, bravery and finding balance in his personal life. unfinished business that still needs to be resolved.

Another great read in the series

Overall, the story was engaging. It could be my ADHD, but I was able to predict the ending halfway through. I would definitely recommend this book, however. Even though this is a book in a series, it can be read as a standalone, and I appreciate that. I will definitely be looking to read more from this series.

Narrator was great! I will be looking for more books narrated by him.

This is the only book In the Wolf series that I have listened to, and I liked the story line and characters. The narrator was exceptional!
