About this listen

Can a hot summer fling mend the hearts of two broken women?

Morgan Donovan had everything she ever wanted: A dream job as a large animal veterinarian, awesome friends, and a loving and supportive fiancée. But it all comes crashing down when her fiancée dumps her after realizing that Morgan’s job will always come first. And, while Morgan still has the job and friends, her heart is broken into a million tiny pieces

Emilia Russo is a burned-out shelter vet. When the unexpected death of her father triggers a mental breakdown that hastens the end of her relationship, she retreats to his house in Seal Cove, Maine. She plans on spending the summer renovating it while she figures out how to pull the pieces of her life back together. But when she runs into Morgan at the dock where her father’s sailboat is moored, her plans for a quiet summer of healing and reflection sink like a stone - the attraction is immediate and obvious, and Emilia finds herself slipping seamlessly into Morgan’s world.

Each woman knows this fling will end when Emilia returns to Boston at the end of the summer, but they’re unprepared for the intensity and depth of their attraction. And, as the gales of fall begin to drive leaves like spindrift upon Seal Cove, Morgan and Emilia must each come to terms with how much they’re willing to give up to stay together.

Spinning a story

Anna has spun a story with the wonderful backdrop of Seal Cove Maine which really is a beautiful place.

Story gets 4 stars because there is not an option for 3.5.

Sorry for such a long review but if nothing else skip down to the last 3 or 4 paragraphs.

Emilia Russo has lost her father, is a burned out vet who worked at an animal shelter, had a mental breakdown and to top it all off her fiancé broke up with her.

Losing a loved one is never easy and different people deal with the loss in their own way. I think Anna captured Emilia’s struggle with the loss of her father very well. Several years ago I lost both my father and mother and it was heartbreaking and depressing and there are rarely days that go by that I don’t still think of them.

It is hard for an animal lover to have to put an animal down and over time having to make that choice simply due to finances can be very trying and all the veterinarians, staff and volunteers at animal shelters that love and care for the animals have my appreciation. From what I have seen and know of veterinarians I think this was captured in the book.

I love many different types of books and my partner will tell you that I would read the back of a soup can if that is all that is available. I have read several of Anna’s books and like many books I read they make me think and this one did as well but I think it could have been better in some areas.

The areas in the book dealing with Emilia that were not captured very well from my perspective is how Emilia dealt with and is dealing with her depression and mental breakdown as well as the breakup with her girlfriend. If the author had written in more discussions between Emilia and her therapist or more dialogue between Emilia and Morgan or anyone on those subjects I think it would have made the story much better, after all Emilia is in Seal Cove for a summer of reflection and healing…at least that is what the book summary said but to me there was not enough of it.

Morgan, what a bitch in my opinion. I have no idea what her friends truly see in her at least not from her actions within this book. Yes she loves her job and from what is said about her in the book she is loving and protective but from what she says at times and the way she treats her friends, especially Stevie, and from many of her actions I just don’t see it. Her actions in the book lead me to feel like she is a self-centered bitch perhaps not a major one but leans that way. From the moment I found that Emilia had a crush on Morgan from when she was a teenager I thought OMG not another book about reuniting a teenage crush. The love between Emilia and Morgan did not seem like love to me, it seemed more like lust than love.

In my opinion Morgan is not the best fit for Emilia in this book. I felt Stevie would have been the better fit. I am sure in the series Anna will match up someone for Stevie but I will still always feel the best match would have been Emilia and Stevie.

What this book could have used was simply MORE communication and LESS cliché. More communication between Emilia and Morgan. Instead of having so much internal dialogue they should have communicated that internal dialogue to each other. Maybe I am in a unique relationship, I don’t know, but me and my partner talk, even when we started dating one of the keys to our relationship was communication between each other. We talked to each other and still do. I much prefer romance books where the characters actually talk and discuss their issues and feeling rather than run out the door because they feel hurt or find a business card on a nightstand. To many lesbian romance novels make it look like us lesbians can’t communicate and deal with our feelings because we run off with our tail tucked between our legs. Less cliché such as weak reasons to break up or run out the door. I mean really, Morgan finding Kate's business card was a good reason to dart out the door? Come on get real. So many authors come up with such silly reasons to create a breakup in lesbian romance that it has become a cliché. It (the breakup) truly has become an overused cliché and it truly lacks original thought.

If an author wants to create a breakup because they do not want to stray from an overused template then at least make it something real. Give it some good thought. Throw us readers and listeners a curve ball of originality by giving us a good reason for one of the main characters to run off crying or to slam the door and use some creative writing to get them back together.

Spindrift

This story is so good - it makes we want to more to Maine and become a veterinarian!

Morgan and Emilia are such great characters. Emilia is dealing with the loss of her father. Morgan is recently (fairly) single, after her fiancé ended things. Their first meeting was anything but smooth, but they eventually gave each other the benefit of the doubt. It was wonderful to see how their relationship developed. They had off-the-charts chemistry!

BONUSES:
1. Lots of pets!
2. A wonderful group of friends
3. Supportive families
4. Boats

Everything about this story was cute, fun, and romantic! An absolute must read!

Good story

It took a long time to be engaged in this book, although the story and the characters a well written, but the narration is not so much and when narration is not good it is hard to listen.

Loved the story

Struggled with this book because of the narrator. I don’t think any of the voices were consistent and the accents were horrible. It really made it a hard listen but Anna writes a great story so I didn’t give up on it.

Poor narration

I really enjoyed the story overall, however the narration felt like Siri trying to use a Boston accent. It just felt forced and automatic and took me out of the story.

Hard to stick with it

Narration was so bad…very little character differentiation and the pace was so slow, continuity was lacking!
