About this listen

When I went to the Caribbean for my friend's bachelor party, I wanted to experience white sand beaches, crystal blue waters, and gorgeous women. I didn't want to almost get assassinated.

On the plus side, a beautiful mermaid saved me and magically healed my wounds. She’s got more scales than I pictured the beach babes having, but she's just as drop-dead gorgeous as I pictured them being.
The only hiccup is that I’m apparently the only one who can save her world. That's a tall order for a normal guy, so it helps when she reveals I have the mystic ability to bend the elements of water and lightning to my will.

This isn’t the kind of holiday weekend I expected, but if I can learn to master my powers then I’ll become the infamous storm mage, one of the most powerful men in the world.

Time to get soaked up and powered on!

The pacing needs some work. Otherwise I loved it

I greatly enjoyed it. And it put me in mind of other series where a human had to build trust between them and the monster folk they met. My only thing is probably that I wish it took a little longer to earn that trust romantically/sexually. Like getting to a friendship level and then eventually becoming a life mate/becoming affianced in another chapter or 2 All of that aside, I can't wait until the next book. Hopefully it'll be within the next year or so here on Audible. Thanks for everyone involved in producing this fun and exciting haremLit fantasy book.

Another great tsyory from Mark Torr!

What is there not to love written by Mark Torr? This story is no exception and I absolutely enjoyed it. The characters are fun and exciting, they feel fully developed, and the world they engage with is interesting. I look forward to the next book from Mark! Audio Version: Patrick DuBois and Hannah Blaire do a great job with this title and their characters!

Very enjoyable listen!

Mark Torr never seems to disappoint with his storytelling. The MC is a likable guy who is good with kids (I really liked that about him) and is only mediocre at everything in life instead of being a McGuyver. This is also not a slice of life but progresses at a slower pace and allows you to get to know the characters and the landscape they traverse. Patrick DuBois and Hannah Blaire did a superb job giving everyone distinct personalities.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable listen that was very entertaining. There was also plenty of excitement so it never felt like it was dragging along. This is a perfect listen for a long drive or any chore where you can be on autopilot. Definitely a keeper and worth the credit. Mark Torr, you did it again!

Fun harem LitRPG

Our MC is in the ocean for his first snorkeling adventure when he gets attacked by an unknown entity and then rescued by the queen of the mermaids and a bird woman and taken to another world.
The Mermaid queen has him escape through a portal to lands unknown with the instructions to rescue her daughter from the big bad that abducted her and is taking over the world.
He needs to save the beast people that all hate him and are scared of him because he's the only human that cares for them. All others are working for the big bad guy. And desiring to become the big bad's thralls because it will give them powers.
After convincing a hot fox woman that he will be more helpful alive, they go off on the adventure together.
Great start to a series!
Author and narrators do an awesome job.

Pretty good

Portal monster girl harem op mc, magic system is a little deus ex machina. The author is a little heavy handed in the relationship building. The story is pretty good and the performance is great.

Pretty good opener

Right up front before you read any further just know that I recommend this book to anybody thinking about giving it a shot. A little context for my review. I tend to take it easy on the first and last book of any series as not every series makes it to “The End” and the first of anything can be a shaky endeavor. I also try to make clear the distinction between the quality of the writing/performance of the author/narrator and my personal tastes should they differ.

The main character is out with friends on a boat that appears to have been chartered. I say this because there are other people on the boat and one in particular who is (redacted for Amazon). Despite everybody's interests this particular individual convinces the main character and his friends to have a poker game in which he cheats. As a part of the bet, they're supposed to jump into the water. The main character jumps in only to be stabbed because the (redacted for Amazon) is a villain. The main character finds himself pulled through a portal near or around the bottom of the ocean. Rescued by two lovely ladies and then subsequently sent on a quest to free the people from the villain and his thralls. Before our hero can be trained in his new powers the area in which he was revived comes under attack. Now topside he finds himself under attack by giant crabs. Then after defeating giant crabs, he finds himself under attack by a beastkin who believes he is one of the thralls and thus an enemy on the side of those who killed her parents. This is all at the beginning setting up what's to come. It hooked me and I enjoyed the story.

The narrators are Patrick DuBois and Hannah Blaire. I'm not familiar with either of them but I was pleased with their performance in this book. The author wrote a quality story in my opinion, and I would definitely recommend to anybody reading this review that they check out his trilogy titled “Divine Collector.” Lastly, I'll just say good job to everybody who had a hand in bringing this book to us, the audible listeners. Now I can't wait to see what you all do in the future.

C-

Harem novels are not known for being literary masterpieces. This one is pretty average - perhaps a bit below average.

As for the delivery, the female voice actor tended to have flat affect - she didn't tend to portray emotion or bring personality to the characters.
