About this listen

When someone suffers through trauma, can healing happen? And, if yes, how does it happen? Dr. Diane Langberg tackles these complex and difficult questions with the insights she has gained through more than 40 years of counseling those whose lives have been destroyed by trauma and abuse. Her answer carefully explained in Suffering and the Heart of God is Yes, what trauma destroys, Jesus can and does restore.

But it's not a fast process, instead much patience is required from family, friends, and counselors as they wisely and respectfully help victims unpack their traumatic suffering through talking, tears, and time. And it's not a process that can be separated from the work of God in both a counselor and counselee. Dr. Langberg calls all of those who wish to help sufferers to model Jesus' sacrificial love and care in how they listen, love, and guide.

The heart of God is revealed to sufferers as they grow to understand the cross of Jesus Christ and how their God came to this earth and experienced such severe suffering that he too is well-acquainted with grief. The cross of Jesus Christ is the lens that transforms and redeems traumatic suffering and its aftermath, not only for the sufferer, but it also transforms those who walk with the suffering.

Fabulous Blending of Healthy Theology & Psychology

Seriously one of the most poignant books I’ve read on suffering, trauma and a Biblical response. This is useful for pastors, counselors and member care practitioners. I am glad I purchased it because I will likely listen to it again. The author doesn’t mince words calling out various types of trauma, and painting a picture for those who perhaps have been less than sensitive in addressing such issues. She speaks scriptural truth in context that should encourage anyone from a faith perspective facing the need to respond to trauma in their sphere of influence.

When we suffer with someone it’s as if we are suffering with Christ himself…joining in the fellowship of his sufferings.

I have listened to this book twice now. The way the author outlines what suffering is, why it’s important, how to handle your personal suffering and walk with someone in their own suffering is sobering. She backs her words with scripture as she leads us to reflect on true, godly suffering. She mentions that this work is messy but through the cross of Christ it is beautiful. I have made many notes and marked clips that I will listen to again and again. This book has transformed me for the better as an individual and as a caregiver.

Truly inspiring!

I loved this book! At moments really hard to listen in on the darkness. It plumbs the depths of our depravity we live and breathe amongst. And challenges you to keep your focus on Christ and the Cross as you offer help and hope to those suffering.
Excellent resource that I will revisit often!

A Must Read

The best book I have ever read on working with traumatized people. I wish it would have been a text in grad school.
