Publisher's summary

Power has a God-given role in human relationships and institutions, but it can lead to abuse when used in unhealthy ways. Speaking into current #MeToo and #ChurchToo conversations, this book shows that the body of Christ desperately needs to understand the forms power takes, how it is abused, and how to respond to abuses of power.

Although many Christians want to prevent abuse in their churches and organizations, they lack a deep and clear-eyed understanding of how power actually works. Internationally recognized psychologist Diane Langberg offers a clinical and theological framework for understanding how power operates, the effects of the abuse of power, and how power can be redeemed and restored to its proper God-given place in relationships and institutions. This book not only helps Christian leaders identify and resist abusive systems, but also shows how they can use power to protect the vulnerable in their midst.

Excellent

Diane gives a beautiful picture of what it means to be an ally to survivors of abuse and of the love Jesus has for them, while clearly explaining how leaders and institutions can get this so wrong. The book is full of wisdom and perspective that all Christians would do well to consider.

The content is compelling. Abuse in the churches is real and ongoing.

There's a lot to think about in this book. A better narrator would make listening so much better.

Required reading

What a profound work! This book would be beneficial for every leader claiming to be a disciple of Christ. As a follower of Christ, it is our duty to expose the deeds of darkness - especially within the church - and protect “the least of these” above all else.

An honest, compassionate challenge to abuse of power

This book has been such a blessing. Sometimes it hurt due to the accuracy, but Dr. Langberg sees and addresses what others refuse to acknowledge. Knowing that there is any voice speaking against abuse of power in the church is a glimmer of hope. She shines light on the pain of those broken by the institution of the church and uses Scripture to uplift with truth and compassion.

Also, Pam Ward is such an excellent narrator and reads with such clarity and understanding of the text. She expresses the compassion of the author in her tone, which aids in engaging with the material. Absolutely recommend.

Riveting Truths

Diane Langberg reveals many riveting truths about abuse if power in the Body of Christ. This book has helped me sort through woundings, both old and new, I have endured while working in ministry. There are a few chapters that I listened to multiple times, and I'm sure I will listen again because the wounds run deep.

PTL for the opportunity to heal from an organizational disease we can not readily discuss.
