Publisher's summary

Find freedom and healing from painful memories and relational struggles and learn how your past has uniquely prepared you to experience more joy.

Tragedy and pain inevitably touch our lives in some way. We long to feel whole, but more often than not, the way we've learned to deal with our wounds pushes us away from the very restoration we need most. Renowned psychologist Dr. Dan Allender and counselor and teacher Cathy Loerzel present a life-changing process of true connection and healing with ourselves, God, and others.

With a clear, biblically trustworthy method, Allender and Loerzel walk you through a journey of profound inner transformation - from the shame and hurt of old emotional wounds to true freedom and healing. Drawn from modern research and their pioneering work at the Allender Center, they will help you identify your core trauma in one of the three outcast archetypes - the widow, orphan, or stranger - and chart your path of growth into the God-given roles of priest, prophet, or leader. This book will help you learn:

  • What to do about feeling out-of-place and directionless
  • How your coping mechanisms create a false sense of health
  • How to embrace your divine calling and find lasting reconciliation
  • How your heart wounds are your unique invitation to true strength and purpose

Your past pain does not dictate your life. Answer the call to healing and discover your life's beautiful story and a future of hope and freedom.

Lots to Learn

Had a lot of examples to help understand the guides being presented and the couple did a great job of sharing and helping us to understand those principles given!

Life-changing!

This is my first listen but third time through Dan and Cathy's profound work. I highly recommend it to all who are willing to engage their family of origin story in order to look ahead towards redemption and calling.

Totally new way of understanding some of our universal traumas, with a beautiful way to heal them

We have all experienced certain traumas just by living life- the abandonment of the orphan, the exclusion of the stranger, and the loss and isolation of the grieving widow/er. The answer lies in receiving solace in God, as nurturing priest to our orphaned souls; as courageous prophet proclaiming the truth of our belonging; and in all-powerful king in providing us with every need. As God helps us, we can then learn to see and help the orphans, the strangers, and the widow/ers among us.

Definitely rereading

I am definitely re-reading this with a notebook and pencil in hand, taking notes and wanting to share with a friend to do it together. Thank you for writing this book and making it audible for my drive to work and home.

Great insight and understanding

I really enjoyed this book. Especially at a time in my life when it’s almost impossible to understand why myself and loved ones are struggling and how can I/we address it.
I will be looking into the Allender Center website.
Thank you!

loved it

I strongly connected to the content and will be recommending it to others to see their orphan stranger and widow and understanding how through God they lead into the kind of Priest, Prophet, King or Queen God is calling us into

A very transformative Journey

This was suggested to me by my husband. He has a friend at work that is reading this. I picked it up to see why he thought it would be good for both of us. Let me tell you, I was not expecting the way this book opened up the old wounds and helped me realize why they were still being deployed for protection? Odd how we carry things for years and never really realize why. It was not comfortable to poke old wounds, but it relieved me from letting them control me anymore. It was very helpful for our marriage.

One criticism I have is that the chapters are mislabeled. The player is telling me it is Chapter 6, when in fact it is chapter 5 and so on.

Listened in one day

I purchased the audio version this amazing book and now want to buy the hand copy to go through it at a slow pace to really take in the beauty and thoughtfulness of the authors thoughts and words. I agreed with much and have questioned several things to want to sit with the authors and ask more questions.
