Story
From the beginning, Geneen Roth was told she was too sensitive, too emotional, too curious, too demanding, too intense, and too big. Yet gaining and losing weight for decades did not improve her self-worth or reduce other people's criticisms. Like most women who struggle with their weight, she believed that if she could resolve what seemed to be the source of her self-hatred - how and what she ate - she would be thin, happy, and free. That belief, she discovered, was false.

“It's not a diet, it's a lifestyle.” You've probably heard this phrase from any number of people in the wellness space. But as Christy Harrison reveals in her latest book, wellness culture promotes a standard of health that is often both unattainable and deeply harmful. The Wellness Trap delves into the persistent, systemic problems with that industry, offering insight into its troubling pattern of cultural appropriation and its destructive views on mental health, and shedding light on how a growing distrust of conventional medicine has led ordinary people to turn their backs on science.

Another amazing book by Geneen Roth
Thank you, Geneen Roth! What you are teaching is life-changing!
For those of you who are considering whether to purchase the book or not, I have two questions for you to ask yourself that will make your decision easy. “Am I committed to practice what this book teaches me?” and “Am I committed to practicing it not once or twice, but as long as I become really good at it?” The book will not fix your issues. Your openmindness and your willingness to practice what it teaches will. Keep in mind though that it is not about how to achieve a certain destination. It is about enjoying your journey all the way. Even Geneen admits that she still has those times when she notices that she has put on weight. But the way she deals with it is now different. Instead of beating herself up for gaining weight, she faces the problem with compassion and curiosity by asking, “Ok. What’s going on here?” and leans into her feelings instead of running away from them. That’s is the only way I know to truly heal.
And guess what? When you look at the feeling and allow it to happen, don’t resist, run away, or stuff it with food, you will find out that it is not as scary as you thought. It is actually there to protect you. It’s your ally. It’s like a frightened animal. It gets defensive and tries to look scary in order you to scare you, in order for you to leave it alone and go away. But the truth is, that animal is even more scared as you are and is just trying to protect itself. With your feelings, they want to protect you. Allow them to occur and they will calm down.
I know we are all different, but I sincerely hope that this book will help you gain lots of insights just like it helped me. If I were you, I would give it a try. Even if it doesn’t work for you, at least you will be able to put a check mark next to its name and feel better knowing that you gave it a chance, you are trying different approaches and will keep looking for and - I know - will find what works for you. I wish you well.
