About this listen

Marcus was never a hero... and he never wanted to be.

He never wanted a lot of things. He didn't want to go to school for a pointless degree. He didn't want to be an office drone, working nine-to-five to barely make ends meet. Most importantly, he didn't want to play by other people's rules. He wanted to do things his way and live life on his terms. Some people might have called him a criminal, but he called it freedom.

Too bad it got him killed.

When everything changed, death didn't take like it used to. Marcus returned to find everything was different: the people, the places, the world, and most importantly... himself. Heroes and villains were more real than in any comic book, and it was up to him to find his place in the city he used to call home. Unlike before, this time, he had the power to make people respect him.

In order to figure things out, he will need some help. Thankfully, he has some interesting women to guide him on his path to discovery. Maybe, just maybe, they'll join him in a little criminal activity along the way.

Great story mismatched with a less-than-good performance

Sorry, but I felt the male voice actor was a REALLY bad choice. There was not a drop of emotion in his voice during every scene. Nothing to indicate any form of emotion. It truly felt like some disinterested third party reading a literal textbook they absolutely had no interest in to a batch of school children who couldn’t understand the subject matter. This is a really good story, done a great disservice to by a horrible performance. Honestly, I wondered if the male voice actor suffers from alexithymia, where one is physically unable to express emotion. Strongly suggest a quick change in male voice actor is called for here. As much as I enjoy this author’s work, I really won’t sit through another reading with this male voice actor.

Great world building and good heroes.

Melanie Hastings kills it again as for the book itself the protagonist was more of a hero than a villain. I did like the two heroines though they had nice rich stories. I really didn't like the protagonists goal. it showed zero character improvement in my opinion.

Good, but

right up front I'll simply say I recommend anybody reading this review check out this story. in my experience the beginning of any new story can suffer from the shakes. with that said I'll start with the easy part which is the narration teams performance. in my opinion they did a fantastic job and while I have heard the lady narrator in past performances, I don't recall ever hearing the gentleman narrator before. back to the story we are introduced to the main character who seems to have no redeeming qualities past his professionalism when it comes to robbing banks. he is killed in the late 90s as an outbreak sweeps the world creating a gender imbalance. he comes back to the world approximately 26 years later. he has super powers that are considered as rank. he ends up with a couple of ladies who haven't had the greatest time in society. the whole story appears to build up to this idea of getting him a better life. it's Telegraph pretty early on, but I figured there was no way the author was going to go through with it. our main character was having some difficulty remembering certain things which tended to lend one to believe that his unredeemable features had been sanded off. while that may still hold true the main characters idea is to rob a bank. I have my fingers crossed that when the sequel to this story comes out the lady shouting down for being stupid, but who knows. the world in which the story is told is pretty interesting to me. there's a lot of promise and as such I'm excited to see where it goes next. I am hoping that it does well enough to get a sequel. so, I will simply say Well done to everybody who had a hand in bringing the story to us, the audiobook listeners.

Good

Im taking 1 star from the story for the last thing the MC said. Read the book. Guy has op powers and he decides that. Dumbest MC ever. (Well up until that point)

The Performance was good. I liked the world building. The story is actually good. More of a slice of life story. Until the Mc's last sentence. The story is about 20 adult and 80 story. Its a good ratio.

Book is worth a read. Will get the next one.
