About this listen

Award-winning author and researcher Dan Buettner has traveled the world to meet the planet’s longest-lived people, and learned nine powerful yet simple lessons that could put you on the path to longer life. Where did he find them? In the Blue Zones.

Blue Zones are communities where common elements of lifestyle, diet, and outlook have led to an amazing quantity – and quality – of life. Dan Buettner shares the secrets from four of the world’s Blue Zones. Buettner’s extensive study uncovers how these people manage to live longer and better, but found in the everyday things they do: the food they eat, the company they keep, and their very perspectives on life. In The Blue Zones, they become yours to follow for life!

I enjoyed the book and found the topic interesting and scientifically valid. I have gone on to buy additional books as well as consider other ways to improve my diet in the ethos mentioned in the book. I hope I can easily live to 100!

This fascinating book details Buetner's research of the globe's highest concentrations of centenarians world-wide known as the "Blue Zones." Buetner reviews each of the seven areas in detail, takes time to explain the habits and cultures of the people living there and describes his interactions. He provides examples of the specific people he meets in community and shares their personal details and struggles. Their stories are fascinating. I love how Buetner ties the lessons learned in each community with that of the others, how he identifies the similarities among these communities that, on the surface, seem so different.

What is most encouraging about the study is Buetners' urging that we are each in power of our own health and longevity. He points out time and again that our longevity is not pre-determined or set by our genetics; we can make positive changes to affect our health and long-livability. We can learn from the lessons gleaned from the Blue Zones and practice a different lifestyle which will help us age better.
