Story
It’s Drop Night, the one night every decade when the gods hand out cards to a lucky few. If you get a deck, you’re a deckbearer capable of wondrous feats within the Great Game system. You can control powerful monsters and summon mantles that let you fight alongside your beasts. Ethan Wolfe, top enforcer for the Grimm family mob, has already been overlooked on two previous Drop Nights. People of his ilk seldom receive cards, as the gods tend to favor people who follow their divine mandates, but that doesn’t mean Wolfe can’t hope.

I was a Hunter, and I honored the Code. For my services to humanity and for leading a "proper" life, I was to be rewarded. A new life after death, and a new world to give me some well-deserved rest. But something went wrong. Once again, I must fight. The Monsters that face me here are far more terrifying than those of my past life. They are cleverer, crueler, more unpredictable. But I failed to account for one thing: during the course of my long life, I'd accumulated too many enemies, and they had decided to spoil my retirement. So they died along with me. All Calum Green wants is to reach what remains of his family. Ninety miles of the Scottish Highlands stand between Calum and his family home in coastal Oban. He does not want to make that trek with his cheating ex-girlfriend's bestie at his side. Eilidh MacIntosh has always disliked Calum, and now she's armed with a bloody claymore on top of her haughty disdain. But the ascension directive is clear: humans cannot survive this new world alone—and this pair makes an annoyingly good team.

When I first read this adventure, I was immediately sucked in. Experiencing it audibly stoked memories of my first read. The narrator hit the voices of my favorite characters perfectly, especially Spud. Let’s get Dungeon School out ASAP!

Wow something different
Well I definitely laughed out loud more than once. I never thought of a spud in a book as a character but here we have it in this book. There is lots of world building and it's an interesting concept. I can definitely recommend it if you want to read or listen something different, enjoy. Must say the narrator made this story gripping so that I want to see where the story goes.

Electric dwarves, sapient potatoes & plenty of ham!
The book develops a rich sci-fi world where the civilization's entertainment, eclectic inhabitants and consequences all are a delight to explore and interact with along with our hero.
The audiobook narrator did an above and beyond job with the diverse array of characters, both human and otherwise.
