Our ancestors crossed deserts, mountains, and oceans without even a whisper of what anyone today might consider modern technology. Those feats of endurance now seem impossible in an age where we take comfort for granted. Investigative journalist and anthropologist Scott Carney takes up the challenge to find out: Can we hack our bodies and use the environment to stimulate our inner biology?

Whether in lake, lido, river or sea, we know the benefits of swimming outdoors and in nature—environmentally friendly and accessible, it can influence our happiness, our energy and our inner tranquillity. Winter Swimming takes this one step further, as contact with cold water all year round can also have a significant positive impact on our physical health, confidence and well-being. Danish scientist Susanna Søberg leads us step by step into the icy water and explains the 'cold-shock response', the massive endorphin rush as our body reacts and adapts.

Imagine a breathing technique that can increase oxygen uptake and delivery to the cells, improve blood circulation, and unblock the nose. Perhaps it can help open the airways of the lungs, enhance blood flow and oxygen delivery to the brain, improve sleep, and bring calmness to the mind. It might even restore bodily functions disturbed by stress, build greater resilience, and help you to live longer. You might think this description sounds farfetched. But it isn’t.

Thrive or die: That's the rule of evolution. Despite this brutal logic, some species have learned to survive in even the most hostile conditions. Others couldn't - and perished. While incremental genetic adaptations hone the physiology of nearly every creature on this planet, there's another evolutionary force that is just as important: the power of choice. In this explosive investigation into the limits of endurance, journalist Scott Carney discovers how humans can wedge control over automatic physiological responses into the breaking point between stress and biology.

If you’re interested in making money with stocks, you’re not alone. A recent Gallup poll showed that nearly 6 in 10 American adults have money in the stock market. But unless you’ve previously worked as an investment banker, you might have better odds of making money at the casino than with stocks. In fact, researchers from the University of California found that 90 percent of retail investors and day traders lose money. Which is why most people think winning in the stock market is simply a game of chance.

Cold Showers Actually Work
I picked this up out of curiosity after hearing people rave about cold therapy—and I’m glad I did. I started with just quick cold showers, and surprisingly, I noticed a real boost in energy and better sleep within a week. The book breaks down the different methods in a way that’s easy to follow, even if you’re new to the idea (like I was). It also helped me understand the “why” behind the benefits, which kept me motivated. If you’ve been curious about cold exposure but unsure where to begin, this makes it way less intimidating.

An energy booster
I listened to this audiobook hoping for something practical, and it was just that. The book lays out simple ways to stay sharp, both mentally and physically, without sounding like another lecture. What really worked for me was how it connects everyday habits to long-term performance without being overwhelming. I also liked that it didn't just focus on one thing but looked at the big picture. I wish it had a few more real-life examples from people who've tried these methods, but it is still great for anyone feeling drained and looking for a realistic way to get back on track.

Very happy to find this book!
Reading this book was confirmation that my father was always right. Many years ago, I watched my father get up at 5 am and whether it was winter or summer, the first thing he did was take a cold shower before going to work. And what energy he had. I used to say he was a bull. I particularly hate being cold and cold water doesn't appeal to me, although I know from experience that there is nothing better for the health of the skin. I lived for several years where the climate was very hot and we never used heated water for our baths and I always had hydrated and firm skin. When we changed and started using hot water due to the cold the skin instantly started to feel flabby and dehydrated. But this book's step-by-step guide to adapting again independently of the weather is sensational. An important thing to note is that he also warns of the dangers of low temperatures and the care that must be taken in this process. I will certainly be practicing these steps to try to improve my health and healthy appearance. It really is worth the read.

Give it a shot!
I was skeptical about cold therapy, but this audiobook convinced me to give it a shot. Now, I'm hooked! I've been taking cold showers for a month, and I feel like a new person. My energy levels are through the roof, and I'm sleeping like a baby. The narrator's casual tone made the science easy to understand, and the practical tips helped me ease into the practice. It's not always comfortable, but the benefits are totally worth it. If you're looking to boost your health and productivity, give this a listen. You won't regret it!

Cold Therapy Changed My Sleep Pattern Forever
I was skeptical about the cold exposure trend but decided to try this audiobook during terrible insomnia. The three-minute cold shower technique seemed manageable enough, so I started there despite dreading it every morning.
After a week of consistent cold showers, I fell asleep faster and woke up less during the night. By week three, my usual 3 AM anxiety spiral had practically disappeared. The narrator's straightforward style made the science accessible without overselling the benefits or making unrealistic promises.
What surprised me most was how the mental resilience techniques applied to stressful work situations. The book also explains how controlling one's response to physical discomfort helps manage emotional stress—this has been genuinely true in my experience.
The progression plan was perfect for a beginner like me. I'm still not ready for ice baths, but I've worked up to longer cold exposures without the initial shock and panic. If you're struggling with sleep issues or stress management, this approach is worth the temporary discomfort.

A New Take on Cold Sowers
After passing the Ontario Police Ice Diver exam years ago, I never thought I’d be so interested in the idea of cold exposure, but this audiobook got me thinking. It breaks down different methods in an approachable, not extreme or overwhelming way. The straightforward explanations make it easy to see why so many people swear by it. I found myself wanting to learn more and even reconsider my usual routine. The narration keeps it engaging, and the concepts are surprisingly practical.
I am looking forward to seeing the results of using this fascinating concept.

Can't wait to try this!
I've heard of high-achievers using cold water therapy (mainly cold showers at 5 am) as a way to wake up and get invigorated for the day but, happily, this book goes way beyond that. I like the in-depth and straightforward 3 step approach. Can't wait to give it a try.
