About this listen

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson—creator of the smash-hit science fiction and fantasy series Skyward, The Stormlight Archive, and Mistborn—comes a new science fiction adventure.

A man awakens in a clearing in what appears to be medieval England with no memory of who he is, where he came from, or why he is there. Chased by a group from his own time, his sole hope for survival lies in regaining his missing memories, making allies among the locals, and perhaps even trusting in their superstitious boasts. His only help from the “real world” should have been a guidebook entitled The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England, except his copy exploded during transit. The few fragments he managed to save provide clues to his situation, but can he figure them out in time to survive?

Adapted from the novel and produced with a full cast of actors, immersive sound effects and cinematic music!

Performed by Danny Gavigan, Crystal Lee, Helen Day, Nathaniel Priestley, Holly Adams, David Cui Cui, Elias Khalil, Zeke Alton, Andrew James Spooner, Bradley Foster Smith, Colleen Delany, Daniel Llaca, David Engel, Elena Anderson, John Kielty, Mike Carnes, Morgan Dalla Betta, Nora Achrati, Scott McCormick, Stewart Crank, and Yasmin Tuazon.

Great Story, Disappointing Narration

I had previously listened to the audiobook and was excited when I saw this adaptation coming out. I was very disappointed in the narration of this one. As the narrator, the actor was monotonous and boring. He did great when speaking as the character though. It may have been better having a different narrator. Overall, this adaptation did very little to add to the experience of the book and I felt the performance in the original audiobook was more entertaining.

Enjoyed the story!

The performances were great, story was awesome. I really hope there will be a sequel and that GA does their magic again.

Definitely better than a standard narration

Great acting. Much more entertaining than the normal narration. If you are wondering dramatic or standard, definitely pick this one, the dramatic recording.

Great performance

I really enjoy the narration and the special effects in this book. Making the story much more engaging than just by reading it. Pros to cast. The story is quite linear and simplistic. However, the "wizard guide" part of the narration made me chuckle more than the story itself. It’s not the best work from Sanderson but I appreciate him trying different thing, out of his comfort zone.

So Much Fun In Medieval England

This was so much fun! I did an immersive read and so recommend listening and reading this book this way. Part science fiction part high fantasy, this story will be a cozy feel good time for most readers of the genre.

great story, world and characters

the main downside is that the publisher messed up splitting chapters so the whole book is just split into 2 'chapters'

Definitely buy the book, but not this edition

This is what I expected out of the Secret Projects. A witty (no pun, thank the gods) exploration of a different theme than the regular for Brandon Sanderson, with distinct richness of worldbuilding, deep characterisation and intriguing plot. It's a portal fantasy, and one someone may consider a spin on the ever more cursed isekai genre, but with an intricate linking to mostly futuristic cybernetic sci fi concepts, making it a distinct beast of its own. If you have a friend who you want to introduce to Brandon Sanderson and not overwhelm them with the entire book MCU, throw them this title.

The only negative I have about this book is the current iteration: the main narrator (this is a first person POV title) is the most terrible miscast I can imagine. He has a certain gruff melancholy to his tone that absolutely does not fit what is supposed to be a somewhat sanguine, quippy character. There was some lines of dialogue that simply sounded out of place when they come out of the mouth of the current narrator. He has emotional range and gift, don't get me wrong, but I am absolutely dumbfounded he was chosen for this project. As an analogical representation, imagine any role Jake Gyllenhaal role and replace him with Keanu Reeves and if that does not lead to jarring discontent for you, well, it does for me. The rest of the cast were really great, particularly the "teleprompt" lady, but with 90 % of the book going through Elias and how unfitting he was for anything the character said and 50 % of his thoughts, they simply couldn't carry the weight. I was relieved the book was over because of the extra effort I needed to make to immerse myself by trying to tune out the main narrator.
