About this listen

In October of 2013, Drew Hayes began posting a story to his website. Written over the thirteen days leading up to Halloween, when each chapter ended the next step was chosen by the readers. Sometimes this led to great discoveries and triumphs, other paths led to Dead Ends, though even in those there was much to be gleaned.

For ten years, this tradition occurred, until in the year of 2022, the readers chose a finale.

This is their story: a tale of deaths and decisions that spanned a decade.

Did not disappoint

I was a little hesitant because of how it was described, but the choices part was not so often as to be redundant or disruptive to the story.
Just buy it then buy every other book Drew has written you won’t be disappointed.

I was hesitant at first, but I love this.

This was truly a fun ride, is it a literary masterpiece? Maybe not maybe so, but it is something I look forward to making a Halloween tradition.

was so happy to see this become a audiobook.

this is a story I followed when I first found Drew. I'll be honest I didn't finish it, I started to become angry with some of the group choices. They were not what I envisioned, and personally I think I did a better job. But still it was great. it was fun and it really works out as an audiobook. audiobook I was kind of worried cuz of the secrets that were intertwined on the website. But this audiobook really makes it work and brought it all together.

Incredibly fun!

Drew has done it again, love this book and it came out just before Halloween! The adventures just kept going and the side story makes you laugh even more.

I love Drew Hayes.

I love a Drew Hayes. I gave this four out five stars because of the serial format. I did not know about or follow the web series which, I am assuming had a much longer/larger story line and eliciting just Halloween stories left out some of the story. I will always recommend very highly Drew Hayes.

Only on Year 2 and I'm loving it

This is the first book I've listened to in the second perspective, and I'm loving it. I like how the polls are represented in the book, and it gives me a second to pause so I can think about what path I would choose.

Drew Hayes rarely fails, and I'm glad I picked this up.

Engaging and imaginative

The story was engagingly madcap, told with Drew Hayes' usual blend of heart and wild imagination. 'Merlin' is a likeable protagonist, with a mystery to solve and an interesting party of companions, their picaresque adventures satisfyingly rounded out, with few loose ends. Given the fun conceit and the decade of recounting, this accomplished wrap-up is itself a feat of narrative deftness. And Matt Godfrey's adept and soulful voice acting completes the package, doing the story justice.

Another great one from Drew

I didn’t see the end coming!!! So good! It was a little weird to follow at first but that was my fault for not reading about how he wrote it. Still it’s really good.

A Listen of Laughter and Licorice?

I couldn't think of a second word but there is candy so why not?

This is a fun listen from Drew Hayes, made over 10 years. The story was made originally as a daily serial made from reader's input and still contains a lot of that charm. The choices are included at the end of each chapter, as well as what was chosen, with an occasional puzzle. Be ready to write and pause if you want to try to unscramble the puzzles before continuing as it gives the solution pretty quickly.

The story itself shows 10 years of growth from Drew Hayes. The characters grow. The circumstances become more complicated and more interesting. Jim remains the same. There were several times I would try to guess what choice was going to be used and I was right about 50% of the time but there were some absolutely hilarious choices that I'm glad the readers chose.

Get ready for Halloween horror, humor, and 4th wall breaking. I really enjoyed this throughout the 17 hour trip.

So now you get to choose. Are you going to get this book and have a good time getting ready for Halloween? Or, are you going to skip this and have your life just that much more boring?

Poll:
Get and enjoy the book.
Ignore it and be boring.

Result:
Get and enjoy the book.
