About this listen

Two teenagers fight for their place in a world where everybody has powers—and the fate of humanity may be in their hands—in this original superhero series.

On July 6, 1963, human history was forever altered. From the depths of space, a golden wave of light bathed everyone on Earth in rays that rendered them unconscious. Six days later, five billion people awakened with superpowers. For thirty-seven years now, superhumanity has managed to keep the peace. With some exceptions . . .

Matt Callaghan is a clairvoyant. Unfortunately, his uncanny talent for predicting the future has more to do with observation and psychology (read: lying) than actual superpowers. About to graduate from Northridge High, he still hasn’t developed any special abilities. And if the authorities discover the truth, Matt can safely predict he’ll be locked up as a scientific curiosity.

Jane Walker is an Empath, feared and hated for her ability to assume other people’s powers by touching them. Expelled from various high schools for fighting bullies with a dazzling array of formidable abilities of their own, she’s determined to prove her worth and join the legendary Legion of Heroes.

Tasked with employing his “clairvoyance” to monitor his new classmate, Matt must juggle protecting his secret inability and keeping Jane and his friends from killing each other. And when the Legion of Heroes offers Matt a place in their academy, his attempt to play off the organization’s history backfires into Jane getting accepted as well.

As Matt bluffs his way through evaluation and Jane battles for her very life, the pair will soon learn the Legion’s true agenda is far from altruistic—and even farther from heroic...

The first volume of the hit alternate-history series—with more than a million views on Royal Road—now available on Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, and Audible!

I love this world!

Luke Daniels is always spectacular, never any difficulty differentiating between characters, great performance.

Awesome

Great book. I read another review that said that the plot was weak and I have to disagree. The characters were unique and felt alive. Parts of it had me on edge and other parts had me laughing out loud. If you like sci-fi, super powers, and diabolical MCs, this book is for you. I’m going to get the second one right now.

Interesting Twist on the Superhuman Genre

I don't often write reviews, but I felt this author deserved to be called out for a brilliantly written series. Turning the powered human story on its head, where the 'special' individual is the one person in the world without powers was an inspired subject to base a speculative world on.

On top of a beautifully unique concept, Benjamin writes likably flawed characters into his stories that you will root for and enjoy watching grow. I look forward to the next book in this series and any other series he puts out into the world.

Awesome Characters, Terrible Plot

I'm really, really tired since I stayed up all last night reading this book, so I have no patience for a lengthy review or seperating out the spoilers. Here goes:

1) Worldbuilding: Surprisingly realistic and grounded, while making total sense throughout. Also, very fun to learn about.
2) Characters: Both POV characters are interesting and play well together, interactions throughout the whole cast is believable and fun, and they even have realistic reactions to most stressful situations (including a great argument).
3) Writing: Exposition and narration are fluid and unobtrusive, while being engaging in all aspects.
4) Narration: Peak. Lively, emotive, and situationally appropriate.
5) Plot: Starts out stellar with the school arc, peters out in the Academy arc, and needs to commit sepukku for the god damn Weaver arc. [MAJOR SPOILERS] Seriously, having all of the main character's actions be attributed to a single, supposedly benevolent but ultimately dictatorial mastermind (who can see the future and is thus functionally invincible) really undercuts all of our character's agency and decision value. Matt's cowardice and lack of composure in the final act was just insulting after his cool-and-collected attitude during his first chat with Jane. That, and [ULTIMATE SPOILERS] I could deduce the Weaver's manipulations and the false Clairvoyants reveal from the moment they were introduced. I'm not kidding, if they weren't being so UTTERLY transparent about Captain Dawn's betrayal and the Weaver's identity, I would have murdered the old hag for being so cryptic (even if it is appropriate, being sealed underground and all).

Overall, a funny and wonderful read for the first eleven and a half hour, then a tedious slog of cryptic-yet-transparent nonsense and a headless MC in the final hour. FULLY recommend for all readers, although I will warn you (medium spoiler): Matt does not turn out to be a mastermind, unfortunately, and not even a good con man.

If gaslighting was a super power

In a world of superpowered people I liked how the MC used gaslighting and B.S to get by.
