About this listen

Your doctor gives you medical advice. Your mother buys you baby clothes. But who can give you the real skinny when you’re pregnant?

Your girlfriends, of course - at least, the ones who’ve been through the exhilaration and exhaustion, the agony and ecstasy of pregnancy. Four-time delivery room veteran Vicki Iovine talks to you the way only a best friend can - in the book that will go the whole nine months for every mother-to-be. In this revised and updated edition, get the lowdown on all those little things that are too strange or embarrassing to ask, practical tips, and hilarious takes on everything pregnant.

What really happens to your body - from morning sickness and gas to eating everything in sight - and what it’s like to go from being a babe to having one.

  • The many moods of pregnancy - why you’re so irritable/distracted/tired/lightheaded (or at least more than usual).
  • Staying stylish - You may be pregnant, but you can still be the fashionista you’ve always been (or at least you don’t have to look like a walking beachball) - wearing the hippest designers and proudly showing off your bump.
  • Pregnancy is down to a science - from in vitro fertilization to scheduled c-sections, there are so many options, alternatives, and scientific tests to take that being pregnant can be downright confusing!
  • And much more!

For a reassuring voice or just a few good belly laughs, turn to this straight-talking guide on what to really expect when you’re expecting.

Fun read!

First, I have to start off by stating that I got this book free of charge in exchange for a review, but as I always state, this does not in any way impact my review. My reviews are always honest and my own.

Great at any development stage of your pregnancy. Informative. Funny. All around great.

Enjoyable, easy listen..but wow the narrator! Might recommend just reading this book instead of the audiobook

Not sure if the written version of this book really says certain words incorrectly, or if no one previewed the narration before publication, but the narrator causes quite a few funny faces when she says things funny or clearly incorrectly. I feel like this leads the book to be less of a credible source for any pregnancy related info. Not that this book claims to fact based, but still sounds a little odd to say pregnancy related words wrong in a pregnancy related book.

A Nice Break

I’ve been listening to and reading a number of statistic/data-heavy books about pregnancy. This one is a great break from those and touches on so many more things the others don’t.
This book addresses more personal (“shallow” and “inappropriate” as some uptight reviewers seem to call it) topics that can’t really be in a science-forward book to please the masses.
This one really felt like I was talking to an experienced girlfriend, or even my mother who is like a friend to me.
I thought the narrator was wonderful and did a great job. She was NOT difficult to understand at all.
I would definitely recommend this one to open-minded and light hearted pregnant women.

Good but dated

As long as you remind yourself that this author is not a medical professional or scientist and that everything she says is anecdotal, this is a highly enjoyable and fun read.

Lots of fun! (A little bit outdated)

I LOVED how honest and blunt this book was, and it’s pretty hilarious in a few parts! However given the rapidly improving nature of medicine, and movement toward empowering mothers to make decisions both during pregnancy, with testing, and in the delivery room, some of the concepts presented are a bit outdated. It’s also a little bit obsessed with how a woman looks, as well as traditional male and female roles, which I think some modern listeners will not relate to given body positivity, health at every size, and other recent movements. All in all a good listen, especially if you don’t already have a bunch of girlfriends who told you all this not-so-fun stuff during their pregnancies LOL!

Great book! Gives all the juicy details

I was thankful for the author’s candidness and upfront honesty about all the little details. I feel much more prepared and will be referencing this book again as my pregnancy progresses!

Innapropriate IMO

Gave up when we got to the point that she was talking about choosing a doctor to flirt with.

A bit outdated in the mindset

Even if this book has been written more than 20 years ago, and present some outdated advices in terms of body image and exercices during pregnancy (for example), it still nice to read something light among all the literature out there about pregnancy. I found myself laughing some time to time, and that felt pretty good. So don’t take everything personally, keep in mind that we are now living in the XXIst century.

Horrible Narrator - Excellent Book

The narration was awful. It's important to know how to pronounce words when you are paid to narrate an audiobook. This was so frustrating to listen to. Purchase the physical book, it's an excellent read. Stay away from the audible version.
