About this listen

Two girls are forced into the woods at gunpoint. One runs for her life. One is left behind....

Twenty-eight years ago, Charlotte and Samantha Quinn's happy small-town family life was torn apart by a terrifying attack on their family home. It left their mother dead. It left their father - Pikeville's notorious defense attorney - devastated. And it left the family fractured beyond repair, consumed by secrets from that terrible night.

Twenty-eight years later, Charlie has followed in her father's footsteps to become a lawyer herself - the ideal good daughter. But when violence comes to Pikeville again - and a shocking tragedy leaves the whole town traumatized - Charlie is plunged into a nightmare. Not only is she the first witness on the scene, but it's a case that unleashes the terrible memories she's spent so long trying to suppress. Because the shocking truth about the crime that destroyed her family nearly 30 years ago won't stay buried forever.

Packed with twists and turns, brimming with emotion and heart, The Good Daughter is fiction at its most thrilling.

Karin Slaughter has done it again!

As stated by the other reviewers, you can always count on Karin Slaughter for a good read/listen. Nor will I restate the synopsis of this book as I don't want to spoil it for anyone. I will say I was initially a little disappointed that this was not another book in the Will Trent series BUT I have to admit that this book is far from disappointing.
Right from the beginning you get a picture of a family that isn't quite right in their interactions. Following the murder of the wife/mother the surviving members loose their cohesion and it takes another 20 years for them to reunite.
This is a really good stand alone book and a great place to get acquainted with this author if you've never heard anything written by Slaughter before. She has such a good style of writing and knows how to pull a reader in. Her characters are very well developed and her storyline complex enough with out getting confusing or predictable. In this book she goes back and forth between the present and the past and wraps up with a solid and complete ending (no cliffhangers). I do hope that if this does become a series that it doesn't mean the end of the Will Trent/Sara Linton series.
Kathleen Early does a fantastic job narrating.
This book has my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

Another great novel from Karin Slaughter

Karin Slaughter has written so many outstanding novels that picking the best is impossible for me. My current favorite is probably The Kept Woman or maybe Beyond Reach or Triptych or even Pretty Girls. The Good Daughter is not as good as any of those, but it is still a solid 5 star suspense mystery that I highly recommend. As usual Slaughter shines most with her great talent developing characters. Slaughter is one of my favorite authors.

Audible shows The Good Daughter as Book 1 in The Good Daughter series. There is certainly potential with sisters Charlie and Sam for future novels, but I doubt it will happen. The sisters could, I suppose join together in Atlanta, possibly with Charlie's husband, in a criminal law firm We shall see. Whatever direction she takes her career, If she writes it I will read or listen to it.

Charlie's older sister Sam (Samantha) had a much larger role in this novel that I anticipated after reading the prequel (Last Breath).

Kathleen Early's narration is outstanding.

Slaughter and Early are a match made in heaven!

there has not been a book by Ms. Slaughter I haven't loved. she knows how to write so you feel every ache along with the character. And Ms. Kathleen Early performance brings each word to life in a way no other narrarator can. I love this damn book.

Slightly predictable

The book was good! I do feel like it was slightly predictable but I still enjoyed it. I definitely found myself getting emotional throughout the book.

Extremely well done

Karin Slaughter’s ability to tell an intricate story continues to be impressive. She nails down complex human relationships that keeps us coming back for more. I love the symmetry and variety in her novels. This could easily become a series.
The women are so strong, even through adversity. I would like to hear less of the ‘b’ word describing women.
Excellent book.

Karin Slaughter is a great writer

If you have been a fan of the Grant County or Will Trent then you already know she is a great story teller.

Excellent story except for....

I loved the story for the most part. It never got slow or boring. The characters were interesting. I would recommend this book highly. So, why only four stars, you might ask. The author paints certain groups of people with one stroke, which irritated me. All of those people are crooked; all of these people are ignorant, the author seems to think. I like to think there are good and bad people in any group. I won't be specific. if you read it, you can see what I mean. If you don't see it, you can chalk it up to my own biases. You will have enjoyed a great book, in any case.

I haven't slept in 2 nights, couldn't stop reading

Where does The Good Daughter rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I usually don't read this genre of books, but got it because of the great reviews. Well for once I am really glad I did, this book was awesome. The character development was spot on. The author has a great skill at describing moments, draws you in and you think you are there, in the middle of the story, yet you as a listener, you stay unharmed. Story was a bit predictable, but nonetheless, worth every minute of the "read". Best books in this genre I have read, so it ranks as number 1.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes, thank you... I did not sleep the last 2 nights, because I kept extending my sleep timer... glad I read the book as fast as I could listen, cause I have to get some sleep. I kept wanting to know what happens now, where are we going with this. Some was predictable, but some of it was tied in the past and the packet had to be opened by untying the knots slowly and deliberately.

Any additional comments?

The narrator was great - one of the best so far. She just did an incredible job. Would definitely recommend listening and keeping this book!! Worth a credit. Attention this is not a read for young listeners - some graphic scenes and quite a bit of cussing! Just saying.

Great Story but Difficult to Listen to at Times

So this is a tough one as the book is really well written, but I struggled with some of the graphic content of the story. There were so many story lines (which were not difficult to follow) which made it especially brilliant. This story is heartbreaking more than it is empowering. Honestly, I really enjoyed it.
Besides the graphic nature and just the sadness of everything, the graphic stuff was told over and over by different points of view. It just made it difficult to listen to sometimes. But, you had to listen because there was always a different twist which was important from the point of view.
All in all, this was a great story...very well written. This content was just difficult for me.
