Publisher's summary

A woman’s seemingly perfect second marriage is rocked by a discovery about the death of her first husband in this twisty psychological thriller from Kate White, the New York Times bestselling author whom Entertainment Weekly called “impossible to outwit.”

Recovering from the unsolved murder of her first husband, Derrick, thirtysomething Emma Hawke has built a new life with Tom, a handsome, successful, and loving widower who finally makes her feel safe again.

Then one day a police detective shows up at their house on the Connecticut shore, asking questions about Derrick’s death. Emma was sure she’d been cleared in the days after the tragedy. So why is law enforcement taking another look now—and questioning the timing of her relationship with Tom? She hadn’t even met him until after Derrick’s death.

Then Emma is shocked to discover that, in fact, she and her second husband attended the same business dinner two months before Derrick’s murder. Did Tom, unbeknownst to Emma, spot her there? Could he have set his sights on her and orchestrated a plan to make her his wife, whatever the cost.

With twists and turns all the way to the last page, this fast-paced, expertly plotted novel will have you asking that age-old question: how well do you really know the ones you love?

Good not great

Kept my interest, the characters were likeable, and the story was very easy to follow. It was good, just not great or remarkable.

Did i miss a chapter or two?

Assuming the story lines that weren’t finished were twists to keep me guessing, but when it ended i was left wondering about at least half of the stories. Seemed to just end without an actual ending.

Disappointing ending

Love Kate White books-this one was great. Until it ended! I actually thought my phone slipped to the end credits. I went back to the last chapter to realize, no it was done. Soft ending and I’m still confused what actually happened :((

Love Kate White! Loved the plot twists!

My first impression as I started listening was that I was NOT going to be able to listen to the book. I found the narrator's whisper quality voice overdramatic and annoying. BUT because I was so caught up by the story, I was able to ignore the performance and focus on the words. And I couldn't stop listening!!

I did keep thinking it was all too much to happen to one person, but I still loved the complicated plot. I didn't want it to end! So when the end came, it felt like everything got wrapped up too quickly. I would have enjoyed more details of the confrontations with various characters in the end... the murder at the office, Brittany's scheme, Kyle, the paintings...

Total fluff

Pretty easy to figure out and weak main character. Could have been better developed to make more interesting

Weak and naive main character

Emma is a weak character - always assuming she is overthinking. Least favorite Kate White book

Too fluffy, skip it.

Narration cadence doesn’t match and there are several mispronunciations. Ending falls flat and characters underdeveloped. Too many competing details and the main character agonizingly tries to explain away red flags in her head which begin to drag on and feel improbable. Title misleading- I’d skip this one.
