About this listen

Hear the second book in The Long Winter trilogy!

They decimated Earth during the Long Winter. Now the Grid has returned, and they won't stop until the human race is extinct. On a ruined world, humanity's last survivors fight against impossible odds. In their darkest hour, they discover a new hope for survival. But it comes at an unthinkable price, with consequences that will change everything.

We thought the war was over. We were wrong. After the Long Winter, Emma Matthews and James Sinclair hoped life would get back to normal. They've settled down in Camp Seven and welcomed their first child, a daughter. And they have waited and watched the sky for any signs of the Grid's return. When NASA discovers that several asteroids have broken from the Kuiper Belt and are headed for Earth, James instantly realizes the truth: the Grid is back.

And this battle will be one to the very end. As he and his team prepare for humanity's last stand in space and on the ground, Emma makes a discovery closer to home, one that will change life for her and James once again. With war raging around them, Emma and James fight to keep their family alive.

In the cold darkness, humanity splinters. New alliances emerge. At every turn, Emma and James face new dangers and question whom to trust. Just when it seems that all hope is lost, James uncovers what may be the key to humanity's survival. But it comes with enormous risks. To implement his plan, he and Emma will have to survive the Grid and another, even more deadly enemy. One thing is certain: their gambit will change the future of the human race forever.

Loved it

I thought it was great, I would have liked the 2 books to be one and there might be a third one coming, I hope so, I want to read more. I love science fiction but am often disappointed, I was not with this.
Some reviewers didn’t like that the science was not correct, OK with me, how am I to know that, I’m not a scientist. I liked the whole scenario, I listened to both books in 10 days. I was disappointed in the characters of Art and Arther, Art being from the first book, his attitude. I’ll say no more for fear of a spoiler.
The narration from Ballerini was masterful, the first book was my first listen from him. I’ll seek out more from him in the near future. I even watched a movie with him in it, Ha!, he spoke very little!

Not a good as book 1

I guess I expected too much in book 2. It was just OK. Maybe book three will be better.

Looking forward to book three

The story continues, drama, fighting, human failings, faith, love, hope. Its all there. Great writing, just sad to have to wait for life on the new planet, so many questions.

Excellent narration!

The story moved along nicely with several surprises. Starting the next one immediately to find out what happened to The Lost Colony.

Good continuation to the series

If you are looking at this book, that means you read book 1 . . . if you haven't read book 1, definitely read it first. I think book 1 is the best; book 2 is second best; and book 3 is the weakest, although I do recommend the entire series. There were parts of this book that really dragged for me, but at times I couldn't put it down. I continue to be bothered by the narrator for the female lead character - her voice just doesn't fit the character at all.

Great book two

Can’t wait to listen to book 3. Story suspense is building. Good character development development continues to hold my attention.

Couldn’t wait to finish, but hated for it to end!

I just discovered this author, and I am so addicted to his works. He’s on my same list as Michael Crichton, Stephen King, Dean Koontz and J.J.Green. I will not stop until everything they’ve written has been read.
