About this listen

Vampire governor of New Jersey Belladonna Barrone has just gotten an epic offer from an unexpected visitor, but it’s not something she’s ready to respond to without serious thought. Besides, she already has a lot on her plate. The recent death of a high-ranking vampire means she and her crew of staff and friends are headed off to the funeral in the middle of the country. But travel can be tricky when it comes to moving vampires. The solution? Rent some luxury motorcoaches and prepare for a road trip that will be unlike any other.

For one thing, the trip includes a stop off to meet the parents of her daughter’s boyfriend. Something Donna isn’t particularly looking forward to. After all, they’re upstanding citizens and she’s, well, the soon-to-be former wife of a mobster currently awaiting trial.

For another, the dark shadow of serious allegations hangs over Donna and her human assistant, Pierce. Allegations made by her arch nemesis, Governor Fitzhugh, that will require both Donna and Pierce to appear before the vampire council. She feels certain she’ll be able to deal with the outcome of her hearing, but Pierce is a different story. The vampire council isn’t known for their mercy with humans.

Protecting Pierce weighs heavy on her. There has to be a way to persuade Fitzhugh to drop the charges, but at what cost? And can she trust his word? While pondering these questions, the funeral activities get underway, and Donna makes a strong new ally.

Then events take an interesting turn and Donna is left with a brand-new issue to deal with. Should she bite the bullet and say yes to the epic deal she was offered before the trip? Even when she feels inadequate to handle what’s required of her?

The only thing she knows for sure is enough is enough. For once and for all, the suck stops here.

my only complaint: I have to WAIT for the next one

I've been waiting for this book. I loved the last 3 and listened to this in one nonstop as soon as I was notified that it was available. That in itself should speak volumes, but let me get more specific.
Kristen Painter writes well, an appropriate balance of showing and telling as well as descriptive language that remains clear and coherent.
Our leading lady, Belladonna, is a grown woman who behaves like a grown woman. She's lived her human life and brings her experience with her as she settles into her place in the supernatural community. I can't tell you how refreshing that is, a mature character capable of behaving like an adult? Chef's kiss!
The large cast of characters that support Belladonna feel fleshed out and three dimensional, despite the fact we only get into Belladonna's head and can never

Don't read this book until...

I really like this series, however the cliffhanger ending of this book, is the kind of ending that makes me stop buying the books.
I highly recommend that if you're vested in this series you should wait until the next book is out to read/listen to this book.

interesting

It's a great story. Not terribly thrilled with the ending, but also sort of get it. Also don't really like the author's attitude towards motherhood from the main character, but that's just a personal opinion. A baby doesn't mean someone's schooling would be placed on hold...that's what online classes are for (well one reason for doing them). [Not really a spoiler you hear the opinion at the beginning of the book. I personally just didn't like the attitude. ]

Yes, but noooooooo😫

I can’t explain my title because I don’t do spoilers, but I think ANYONE would agree. I hate cliffhangers, particularly when the next book (already preordered) isn’t released yet. Fitzhugh is a lying bass-tard, a cheat, and has an ego bigger than the whole North American continent. Donna is amazing and her relationship with Pierce has finally reached an ‘awww’ level (though it was already there, but it’s been turned up a notch). The first fangs club ladies are amazing, even Bunny, though it’s a struggle to say so. Good guys introduced in the last book are fleshed out, which Painter does well. B.J. Harrison, always a winner (I have lots of audible titles narrated by him). Great story, and while the tale meanders at times, you’ll always reach the destination.

Can’t get enough of this world

I just can’t get enough of this world. It was so good that I just had to give five stars. Even though there’s a MAJOR CLIFFHANGER at end! I really don’t appreciate this. And I’m sort of surprised Kristen did it. But, in her defense, at least the major story of this book was concluded. The cliffhanger does go along with it but it’s a whole other can of worms related we did get to see her dad from the last book cliffhanger. But it was sort of anticlimactic. There’s still a lot there to unfold. I’m curious about this. I feel like he will play a major role in the next book maybe? Kristen isn’t telling lol.

I loved all the characters and how they played such big parts in the book. I’m not sure how she comes up with ideas but there was never a dull moment and everything was well thought out. If you like audiobooks then you would love this one. This narrator is one of my favorites. You will think you are getting multiple narrators because he is that good at different voices and accents. Doesn’t matter which sex either.
