About this listen

Ultramarathon Man: Confessions of an All-Night Runner helped introduce the world to ultramarathoning. Now, after three decades of running ultramarathons across the globe, Dean Karnazes is still going strong. This updated and revised edition includes an afterword full of the lessons he’s picked up along the way. He gives personal details on the essential pillars of health—fitness, diet, and sleep.

What does he eat, what supplements does he take, and what kind of mattress does he sleep on? Aging well takes work, and the man who hasn’t stopped is sharing the tips and learnings that have kept him going, mile after grueling mile.

Ultramarathon Man is Karnazes’ story: the mind-boggling adventures of his nonstop treks through the shoe-melting inferno of Death Valley, the lung-freezing ferocity of the South Pole, and the awe-inspiring beauty of the towering peaks and craggy canyons of the Sierra Nevada.

With an insight and candor rarely seen in sports memoirs, he reveals how he navigates the solitary, manic, self-absorbed life of extreme ultrarunning with a full-time job, a wife, and two children, and how running has made him who he is today: a man with an ironclad body, a teenager’s energy, and a champion’s wisdom.

Loved the story of perseverance of the mind and heart over the body and the reason of why to run.

I got this book to see if there was some extras compared to the one narrated by Dean himself and while a few details changed it’s basically read word for word the same as the original narrated by Dean. Personally I think Dean did a far better job. If you see the one with the big yellow lettering on the title get that one. I can’t seem to find it on here now though. Great book you will love the stories and self reflection in this book! Now I got two copies 🤣

Same book as one narrated by Dean himself

I’m glad I am a runner, I think I am in that world, if I wasn’t, I wouldn’t like this self-absorbed listen

I’ve read many books on running and ultra marathon running and I think this may stand out as one of, if not the best in terms of story.

I most recently finished Scott Jurek’s Eat & Run; which in my opinion, was mediocre at best. If you enjoyed that book, you will love this one. Dean Karnazes shares a wildly intriguing story, devoid of any ego.

I found myself laughing, gasping, wincing, cheering, grinning from ear to ear, shaking my head in disbelief, and at many times being profoundly moved.

Even if you’re new to running, I highly recommend Ultramarathon Man. It will undoubtedly give you inspiration for whatever distance and the motivation to persevere, even when your tank is empty.

It’s so good in fact, that I’ve already begun listening to it again.

If you’re a runner, get this book. You won’t regret it

love this story and Dean himself. He is great a story teller. This book has funny parts where I laughed so hard it hurt. To a part or 2 that almost make you a little sad. This book and Dean's others have all made me want to keep pushing to become a better runner and just more motivation for the difficulties of life itself.

The motivation
