Dawn Shepherd always longed to have a father but when her mother finally reveals his identity after 20 years, Dawn realises you should be careful what you wish for. Her father has always maintained his innocence but how much can Dawn trust a man she has never met who has been convicted of murder? Disgusted and intrigued in equal measure, Dawn goes on a mission to uncover what happened to Stephanie and work out if a killer’s blood runs through her veins. Clues are resurfaced, witnesses reinterviewed and wounds reopened in the search for truth and justice. After delving deep into the past, Dawn soon discovers that all is not as it seems.

Her family was issued an insane ransom demand: $25 million in cash and jewels, payable by the end of the school day, otherwise they’ll never see her again. As Jenna’s mother scrambles to gather the money, detectives Mo Butler and George Ortega follow the trail of the kidnappers, which will lead them through a sordid landscape of jealous lovers, broken dreamers, and twisted schemers. But every second counts, and there’s one thing Jenna Wade doesn’t have: very much time.

Ryan Wilkins grew up on a trailer park, a member of what many people would call the criminal classes. As a young Detective Inspector, he's lost none of his disgust with privileged elites - or his objectionable manners. But he notices things; they stick to his eyes. His professional partner, DI Ray Wilkins, of affluent Nigerian London heritage, is an impeccably groomed, smooth-talking graduate of Balliol College, Oxford. You wouldn't think they would get on. They don't. But when a young woman is found strangled at Barnabas Hall, they're forced to.

Definite twists
A little slow to pull me in. Ending was definitely a surprise. Not sure it was a good one though.

Author Michael Wood ~ always a winner!
You’ve read the description, so you know the basic plot. No spoilers here. Jill Halfpenny and Mark Stobbart are perfectly paired with their on-point vocals. I finished “Vengeance Is Mine,” an audictive listen, in two days. From the very first, I was hooked. Wood pens, with his masterful flair, another offering that introduces us to captivating and dangerously puzzling subplots, from present day to 20 years previous. You’ll want to listen carefully; no multitasking now. I learned that once again; I know better. Emotions run the gamut from heart-wrenching to humorous to chillingly creepy, keeping my attention throughout. “What’s in the box? Gwyneth Paltrow’s head” had me giggling. We go from chapter to chapter with these suspicious and devious characters’ involvement, filled with jaw-dropping surprises. With three hours left, I was no closer to “whodunit,” and there were several. This rollercoaster ride of an investigation made it difficult to stop for a break. Michael Wood is genius! I have quite a collection of his audiobooks and look forward to more. Highly recommended indeed! Worth a cherished credit, however, I found it in Audible Plus catalogue. An awesome nod to Wood, Halfpenny and Staddart, for combining their gifted talents, making this available in Audible. Again, I’m shrieking from my rooftop, “Epic, I say! EPIC! EPIC! EPIC!”

Surprising cast of characters keeps it rolling
This was full of multiple mysteries, including character motivations. The relationships between characters were also an unexpected mix. Although fairly low-key, the action keeps one listening eagerly until the end.
