About this listen

For many children, the summer of 1988 was filled with sunshine and laughter. But for 10-year-old Kris Barlow, it was her chance to say goodbye to her dying mother.

Three decades later, loss returns - her husband killed in a car accident. And so, Kris goes home to the place where she first knew pain - to that summer house overlooking the crystal waters of Lost Lake. It’s there that Kris and her eight-year-old daughter will make a stand against grief.

But a shadow has fallen over the quiet lake town of Pacington, Kansas. Beneath its surface, an evil has grown - and inside that home where Kris Barlow last saw her mother, an old friend awaits her return.

Eerie, unsettling, just great!

I love a good ghost story, but is there really a ghost at work here? Perhaps something even worse? So many interesting twists in this story! A great performance. Very well done.

Tropes galore

The story was fine. I didn’t hate it, but it was nothing new or unique. I felt exactly the same way for Kill Creek.

Good story once it got going.

it took a really long time to get there... how much mundane mother/daughter time do you need?!

Jump Scare tension

The story was beautifully wriiten, I loved the detailed descriptions they were different and unique. The whole book had a feeeling like something scary was about to happen but never appeared. I felt like a Boss battle in a video game was about to start and the boss never showed up.

Slow to get going, but worth it.

I was drawn in from the moment I hit “play,” but I must admit that it took a long time to get rolling. I was probably half way through before it amped up. It’s still a good listen, though. There were a few moments that were difficult to hear, so I may have skipped ahead a few times. These were bits that were too descriptive for my taste. The narrator did a great job. If you like stories about the supernatural, I recommend you give this one a shot.

Good

the language and metaphors used in this book are beautiful. And it is a meaningful story. The only reason I didn't give it five stars because it took a long time to get going. I love a slow burn but this was a very slow burn. once it got going though it was crazy Good! scary and heartfelt and just well done!

Too much focus on the mundane

I really enjoyed Kill Creek so I was really anticipating this book. I was disappointed. About 2/3 of the story could have been left out and the story would have been much better. I did not need hours of mundane mother daughter relationship facts to establish the “bond” or the trauma. There were also some other things that were also in the story which did not have any resolution and I was waiting for some explanation as to their purpose. I will say the reader did a fine job with the story, and that’s part of why I stuck it out to finally reach “the good part.” I would say skip it and choose Kill Creek. If you’ve listened to Kill Creek you may be disappointed.
