About this listen

Life's a game. At least it is for everyone stranded in Viridian Gate Online, the only RPG where you can swap the apocalypse for an avatar and a fist full of magic . . .

Jack Mitchell knows he won't survive the impact of the massive asteroid hurtling towards Earth. He's not one of the handful of lucky lottery winners scheduled for rescue. But he did luck into a NexGenVR capsule, which means Jack can risk a one-way trip to the world of Viridan Gate Online (V.G.O.), an ultra-immersive fantasy role-playing game. Taking that leap of faith, though, means permanently trapping his mind in the game and killing his body in the process.

Worse, one in six die during the transition, and even if Jack beats the odds, he'll still have to navigate a world filled with vicious monsters, domineering AIs, and cutthroat players. And when Jack stumbles upon a secret conspiracy to sell off virtual real estate to the ultrawealthy—transforming V.G.O. into a new feudal dark age—the deadly creatures inhabiting Viridian Gate's expansive dungeons will be the least of his concerns.

If Jack can't game the system, he's going to be trading in a quick death for a long, brutal one. Oh well, at least he gets a dragon . . .

This lit RPG is good although it is just like all the rest with a kind and well meaning hero who dies in the real world and is made special for some reason or other Destined to say the game world with the help of an AI god.
Even so I liked this book I can't get enough of them so this author has nothing to worry about from me. Just keep the XP coming and give him a cool Mount an I'll keep listening.

P.S. I just have to say no offense but the Reader is just not good. He is just to one dimensional. All of the male characters had the same deep voice it just put me off for some reason.

A good lit RPG just like the rest of them

Would you listen to Viridian Gate Online: Cataclysm again? Why?

No, it is a decent book and I will continue the series but not good enough for a second listen.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Grim Jack is really the only choice, the other characters are not developed enough to be a favorite character so he wins by default

Any additional comments?

The story is good but not as good as other series in this genre. I do have a slight issue with the narrator also. He does a good job but he is WAY too serious, the entire book is read in a serious tone.

Decent book for this genre

Been through quite a few litrpg books in the past few months. Concept is solid and I have yet to here a scenario quite like this in any litrpg so far, so points for originality.

Do yourself a favor and grab this one. Short and sweet.

Great litrpg

While the living on an MMO, trapped in one or some such has been done well and done poorly this story takes it in a new direction.

It mixes the genre with future apocalypse grounded sci-fi and a splash of potential dystopia that is the protagonist's goal to prevent.

All the tech is probable without any technobabble and you can look up the terms yourself to see early stuff already in development. Something usually lacking in these genres.

The mind uploading tech is vague but still follows what I just outlined. Neuromorphic and memristor hardware is already in development.

The story itself is not groundbreaking but the way it's presented is still entertaining.

If you decide to listen I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

A Unique Take On Established Genres

So I have now listened to all 7 of this series. Let me just say,, epic set of books. The writing is pretty darn good (minus the over use of preternatural lol). The story line flows really well and it plays like a movie of imagination with each word. What I think is most impressive is the reader. He does such a good job. No monotone, bore to his reading. He is a large part of why I loved the books so much. I’ll be looking for more of his work regardless of the type of book.

Epic…

The book is written very well. The voice performance from Mr. Taylor not so much. He is really good at just reading and doing minor voice alterations. When he tries to do too big of a change it is almost cringy. He would be great narrating other books. Just maybe not LitRPG.

Not bad, not great

I usually have very low expectations for litrpg books and tried it since is was a free plus membership book. I was very surprised at how well this book was written. Good pacing, intresting characters and a realistic world they are exploring. Only downside is when the narrator "stage shouts" he gets a weird tune to his voice.
Definitely give this book a try. Looking forward to reading the whole series.

In depth and complex

What an amazingly well-executed piece of art. Not only was the voice acting perfection but the book itself is simply wonderful. I am working on several books myself and I must say this one was a wonderful find. I cannot wait to review the rest of the series. What a beautiful concept! Thank you James Hunter and thank you, Armen Taylor. Bravo! SKOL!
