Publisher's summary

Magic weapons. Deadly monsters. Epic quests. All just another day in the life of a Vigil.

Boyd Knight found his calling when he joined the Marines and qualified for the elite Force Recon. He’d found a tribe and a family, so when a hand grenade landed near his team, he jumped on it without thought or regret.

But instead of winding up dead, he wakes up butt naked in a cave full of monsters with a knife in one hand and a pistol in the other. He’s been chosen by Raguel, Five-Faced God of Justice, and entrusted with the power of the Vigil Bound. Every kill makes him stronger, and thanks to the Ascendant System, Boyd can level up, unlock increasingly powerful spells, and even harness the abilities of the monsters he’s been dispatched to hunt.

If he can survive the deadly shapeshifter stalking him from the shadows, Boyd’s second life promises to be even more ass-kickingly epic than his first.

From the bestselling author of Rogue Dungeon, Bibliomancer, Shadowcroft Acadmey for Dungeons and Viridian Gate Online comes a shoot-'em-up LitRPG fantasy series brimming with spells, upgrades, guns, and monsters!

First Solid New Lit RPG Series in a while

it's right up there with the Defiance of the fall, primal hunter, dungeon crawler Carl and randidly ghost hound series.

one of my new favorites

I absolutely loved this . everything from the absolutely perfect rendition of a marine idea of " if it won't die, use a bigger gun " to the blooper reel. can't wait for the second book

Worth the read!

Solid characters and story line. Couldn't get over the very beginning. Dude chose to pick his friend as a spirit guide and this helped add a deranged pixie to the story. Please lean into that more. lots of potential humor there. Can't wait for the next one.

Strong narration

The narration was awesome. It really brought the characters to life. The story was good not great, in reference to the writing of the characters not the plot.

An epic story and master work within the LitRPG genre

James Hunter came out and dropped a master work within LitRPG. A huge shout-out to Luke for also bringing the story to life even more. This story has action, humor, depth and non stop fun and entertainment. a level of immersion that I haven't gotten in a long time. This is a top tier LitRPG story that everyone will enjoy and could easily be put down as a Military LitRPG sub-genre. Great stuff James. Well done!

A veterans' wet dream.

Lots of fun. As a vet I appreciated all the references and the real-world dialogue of anyone who has been there. Great writing and amazing performance by the reader. Exactly what I would expect from a devil-dog sent to another world to deal out justice.

Marine approved yes

I'm a retired US Marine and right from the first chapter and what he's been going on and he's saying I cannot confirm or deny half the stuff that he mentions that has made me laugh my head off non-stop so also the events in the beginning story have brought me to tears because of my experience when I served in Iraq when I was also in delusion so.
very enlightened story and hilarious inside prongs from his friend who's now a ghost and oh man I can't stop laughing when they bring up some of the stuff about in-game RPG Easter eggs that have brought me to tears cracking up so hard. but yeah so far a damn good read and a listen and I'm enjoying every bit of it and yes
this Marine approves of the story and it's a damn good one.
