About this listen

The end of the world sucks. The end of the world alone is worse.

So when Dr. Lisette Chen discovers her staff have uploaded their consciousnesses into the massive MMO, Viridian Gate Online, she reluctantly takes a chance and logs in. Her goal? Discover why her colleagues abandoned her when she needed them the most.

In a blink, she finds herself in a fantastical world where her healing skills - both as a doctor and a Priestess of Gaia - are sorely needed. A group of dark priests is spreading a digital plague that threatens NPCs and Travelers alike, and somehow it is all connected to her old coworkers. Lisette is the only one who can unravel the mystery before time runs out on humanity’s new safe haven.

Lisette’s already lost one world, and she sure as hell isn’t going to lose another.

From James A. Hunter - author of Viridian Gate Online, Rogue Dungeon, and Bibliomancer - and debut author E.C. Godhand, comes an epic new entry into the Expanded Universe of Viridian Gate Online that you won't want to put down.

This book does a great job humanizing its characters. It offers many different perspectives from the real world end is LGBTQ I a a inclusive. It allows free space for people who have genders other than the binary. Just highlights the struggle of finding purpose in adversity, dealing with trauma, and holding true to your personal values. I loved

This was my 17th VGO book that I have either listened to or read, or both, and for me it missed the mark. I did really enjoy the main character, except for the fact she's not allowed to fight... at all! I love reading all the different side stories of VGO and the different view points and angles, but I could have done without reading this one, personally. Plus they constantly mispronounced Morsheim...did they not listen to 1 other VGO book or ask how to pronounce these things!? That's a pretty minor thing, but it bugged me enough to mention, lol.
Still love the series, and there's no bad books!

To start off, thus story has a lot of BIPOC and LGBTQAI rep which, as a BIPOC trans man, I really appreciate. Because, yes, representation matters.

The performance of this book is absolutely stellar, though as is very common for American narrators, the Irish accent is a little bit rocky. Not so much that it distracts, but it's definitely not a great impression. Other than that the narrator does a great job brining the story to life.

The story is a little but rocky, it has some really good moments that had me laughing so hard, I had to replay them. There is a bit of insta love which is not my personal preference, but will satisfy those readers who like a little extra romance. All-in-all a good start with potential to be a great series.

Good Start w Great Potential

If you’ve worked in the medical profession, a lot of the situations and references hit. I personally liked the interaction with the MC and her love interest. It seemed real.

Great story for the healers

Story:

The story is an amazing addition to VGO as a whole. It gives plenty of new insight to the world and mechanics, and we also get to see glimpses of things that the main VGO series mentions and works with, yet in this book the things are in their early stages.

Characters:

I loved the MC and her personality, especially her drive and commitment, but also her take no bull sh*t attitude. The supporting characters complimented the overall story wonderfully and worked well with the MC. We even had one character who was a bit too much (totally extra in their deliverance, lol), yet added they such an element that they worked so well. The bad guys were so well done too as they truly had me disliking them and seeing the corruption they possessed and having me hoping for their end.

World:

Its VGO, haha, yet it adds a great layer to what we already know of the world and brings more of it to life.

Others:

This book brings together two big topics, religion and the LGBTQ+ community. It doesn't force either down your throat and delivers them in a way that their presence builds the story, rather than taking from it. I for one was so happy to see the addition of the LGBTQ+ community in the pages of such a good book. It was at times subtle and then at others a main thought/talk. I absolutely loved the use of Pronouns and edicate towards individuals. Then the religion side of things was a bit more focal, as the series is built around that aspect in VGO given the healer class we see, and while I myself am not a religious person, I felt it added depth to how the world views such things as well as impacting the MC in ways where big decisions are needed.

A Great Addition

The reader did a good job at presenting the book and the story was engaging but the main character made request sexual references and the mix of homosexual word use was confusing. Not for me.

Decent story but too much gay references.

There is a serious lack of adult female MCs in the fantasy genre. This book delivers on that need. It's extremely LitRPG focused, I did fast forward a couple times when she was looking at her fact sheet. There is a tiny bit of romance, though it's more like a few side comments on how pretty someone is. If there's actually going to be a relationship down the road then it's a very slow burn. The story was good, I love that the MC is a healer as that is what I play in FFXIV. I've read a few LitRPGs and this is the only so far that has a true dedicated healer as an MC. Overall I really loved this book for the story and the characters and am really hoping the rest of the series comes to Audible.

Adult female heroine is exactly what I needed

Cons:

I have every book in the VGO series and this is my least favorite of all of them.
The book is full of filler and the MC falls very flat for me personally, as does the relationships she builds with her party towards the end of the book.
The narrator was a little monotone.

Pros:

You get the imperial POV in the VGO series.
It gave me enough interest that I finished it and it has potential.

Slow progression
