Beth Kempton went from being a life-loving, risk-taking adventurer to a grown-up, settled down mother-wife-business owner before realizing the life she had built was suffocating her. Story
We need a fundamental shift in our values—a pivot in how we think, act, work, and connect. Despite what we’ve been told, the most critical mainspring of social change isn’t coalition building or problem analysis. It’s healing: deep, whole, and systemic, inside and out. Here, Shawn Ginwright, PhD, breaks down the common myths of social movements—a set of deeply ingrained beliefs that actually hold us back from healing and achieving sustainable systemic change.

When we have a decision to make and the answer isn't clear, what we want more than anything is peace, clarity, and a nudge in the right direction. If you have trouble making decisions, because of either chronic hesitation you've always lived with or a more recent onset of decision fatigue, Emily P. Freeman offers a fresh way of practicing familiar but often forgotten advice: simply do the next right thing.

Every moment in our life happens only once, and if we let it slip away, we lose it forever - an idea captured by the Japanese phrase ichigo ichie (pronounced itchy-GO itchy-A). Often spoken in Japan when greeting someone or saying goodbye, to convey that the encounter is unique and special, it is a tenet of Zen Buddhism and is attributed to a 16th-century master of the Japanese tea ceremony, or "ceremony of attention", whose intricate rituals compel us to focus on the present moment.

Behind our stress, clutter, and confusion is an infinitely spacious place one might call stillness or joy. This is our natural state of being, but we usually don’t experience it, because we are caught in a web of material possessions, desires, and fears. Our clutter often becomes another member of the family that we feed, house, and lug around. In Your Spacious Self, author and professional space clearing expert Stephanie Bennett Vogt shows us that it’s not our stuff but the holding on to it that creates a force field of stuck-ness that clouds our perceptions and paralyzes our lives.

Story
The practice of mindfulness is most often touted for its profound mind, body, and spirit benefits. Shelly Tygielski here shows that mindfulness can also be a powerful tool for spurring transformative collective action. In a winning combination of memoir, manifesto, and how-to, Tygielski shares her evolution from a Jerusalem-born child of traditional Sephardic Orthodox parents to a middle-class American suburban youth who questioned her faith to a young executive in corporate America.

Story
One morning in 2011, Libby DeLana stepped outside her New England home for a walk. She did the same thing the next day and the next. It became a daily habit that has culminated in her walking over 25,000 miles - the equivalent of the Earth's circumference. In Do Walk, Libby shares the transformative nature of this simple yet powerful practice. She reveals how walking each day provides the time and space to reconnect with the world around us, process thoughts, improve our physical wellbeing and unlock creativity.

Like An Encouraging Conversation With a Friend
This short little gem feels like a lovely sigh and moment of compassionate mindfulness. Now I know many of us will not be able to directly relate to some of the things Beth mentions (she is a published author who has been able to travel the world on a pretty regular basis and is an entrepreneur who has been able to work from home and make her own hours), however I think this is a book that offers an opportunity for simple reflections and a moment to recenter in the wake of a pandemic. This is not a heavy hitting book on the nitty gritty elements that have arisen during this global crisis (though overarching struggles are absolutely mentioned), it feels like a kind conversation of encouragement from a friend. This was a welcome listen and the simple and kind sentiments were appreciated. This is a lovely restorative listen for those that may just be taking a day or afternoon for themselves and want to sit, listen, and allow themselves an exhale. Really recommend for those looking for a bit of comfort and some gentle self reflection.
