About this listen
Statistics don’t lie. Moms today are more fatigued, burned out, and overwhelmed than ever. Smartphones constantly ping and alert and demand our attention. And social media can eat up hours of our days with mindless scrolling and tapping while leaving many feeling empty and lonely. Add to that family commitments, work that is accessible around the clock, and overscheduling, and you have a life that can feel unmanageable and frantic...even running on empty.
Best-selling author and founder of Simplified Emily Ley shares how to live a life of more in a world that often overwhelms to the point of burnout in When Less Becomes More. Emily empathizes with mothers in the throes of exhaustion and provides tools for nourishing their spirits and achieving a life where less becomes more.
In this audiobook, Emily Ley, author of the best-selling Grace, Not Perfection and A Simplified Life, takes listeners on a journey out of that empty place and shows them how to fill their wells with the nourishment that only true connection can provide. She also presents some radical concepts that push against the tethers of modern life, with the promise that more of the good stuff comes when we say yes to less of what keeps us empty:
- Less Rush, More Rhythm
- Less Liking, More Loving
- Less Noise, More Calm
- Less Distraction, More Connection
- Less Frenzy, More Soul Rest
- Less Fake, More Real
- Less Fear, More Community
- Less Great, More Good
- Less Chasing, More Cherishing
- Less Stuff, More Treasures
Getting to more might require some outside-the-box changes, some unraveling of the patterns listeners have adopted, and some reworking of the day to day. Listeners can build a life based on their core values instead of slipping into a life dictated by society or what’s “normal”. Because we weren't made for normal. We were made for more - for a life of fullness, dreaming, and lasting joy.

Throughout history people have sought to cope with a life that is often stressful and hard. We have actually known for some time that developing compassion for oneself and others can help us face up to and win through the hardship and find a sense of inner peace. However in modern societies we rarely focus on this key process that underpins successful coping and happiness and can be quick to dismiss the impact of modern living on our minds and well-being. Instead we concentrate on 'doing, achieving' and having'.

According to Tiffani Bova, this siloed focus on customer experience – without considering the impact on your staff—actually hinders growth in the long run. The most successful companies adopt an Experience Mindset that strengthens both employee experience (EX) and customer experience (CX) at the same time.

Rocket science is often celebrated as the ultimate triumph of technology. But it's not. Rather, it's the apex of a certain thought process—a way to imagine the unimaginable and solve the unsolvable. It's the same thought process that enabled Neil Armstrong to take his giant leap for mankind, that allows spacecraft to travel millions of miles through outer space and land on a precise spot, and that brings us closer to colonizing other planets.

These tiny traumas can slowly build up inside of us, and if ignored for too long, can manifest in our lives as high-functioning anxiety, perfectionism, binge eating, insomnia, broken relationships, and a host of other problems.

Reminders for a Chaotic life

One of my new favorites!
Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.
I have enjoyed Emily Ley’s other books and recently snagged my first Simplified Planner (at Walmart while rushing to grab necessities during my lunch hour on the way to nurse my newborn). Listening to the audible book was like sitting down with a trusted friend who gets this season of life that I’m in and who at points during the conversation hits the nail on the head. While I don’t need anyone’s permission to slow down and make the decision that less is more, it is comforting that someone else understands and can articulate the words that sometimes evade me.
