About this listen

Why do I feel so overwhelmed? Why did I say that embarrassing thing? Is everyone else achieving more than me? What can I actually do to make a difference? Am I the only one feeling this way?

In her internationally bestselling debut book—which draws on her own experience with mental health issues and neurodivergence—writer, podcaster, and advocate Gemma Styles captures the voice of her generation as she gets curious about how we tick in order to better understand and navigate the unique pressures of life today.

In the face of unprecedented levels of loneliness, burnout, and insecurity, and referencing the insight of experts and brand new research, Why Am I Like This? shows that by harnessing the power of curiosity and compassion, we can start to feel more hopeful, connected, and at peace with ourselves and each other. From how we communicate, to our ambitions and self-image, Gemma paints a picture of mental health in the digital age, including her own journey and ADHD diagnosis to highlight the ways in which women’s mental health in particular is often overlooked or trivialized.

A thought-provoking, vulnerable, and engaging conversation on mental health, societal norms, and personal expectations from Gen Z’s favorite big sister.

In my mind

I have never felt more understood then I did with this book. The book by itself was wonderful, but listening to the audiobook while following along took it to another level. Having Gemma doing the audiobook I found interesting because I felt like the words sunk in more. I felt like I could feel and understand the feeling that came with each chapter . When listening to the audiobook it felt like a conversation I would have with one of my close friends. The title was perfect for the book because this book truly does make you think and look deep within the mind to see how it work. This book made me feel understood and not alone. I loved that Gemma brought in scientific facts on how the brain works, I found it quite interesting. Having Gemma read her own book I felt like I could feel her own emotions through her word. So if you like a book that makes you feel heard, and understand why our brains work in different ways then I would suggest this book. 10 out 10! I will definitely be rereading this again!

she does a great job reading this 👏 lots of good information.

I liked all the information but her life is skewed by being Harry Styles sister and she never mentions that and I understand why but still.

How our brains function on a deeper cognitive level

Omg this book was excellent ! Gemma, does such a great job discovering reasons as for why our brains react the particular way they do as well as providing lots of scientific evidence to back her conclusions. Definitely a great read, recommend this 12/10.

Scientific facts mixed with emotional intelligence

I’ve already listened to this book twice because there is so much good information that for me it’s like a reference book. There are three people in my home with ADHD, me, my son and my husband. There is no way, with that much ADHD in one room that you’re going to make it without help, and this book offered me that help. I definitely miscalculated the difficulty of ADHD and this book finally offers the “why” and “how” for me, instead of blaming we get understanding.
