About this listen

Following her explosive debut thriller Falling and its harrowing follow-up Drowning, #1 internationally bestselling author T.J. Newman is back with Worst Case Scenario.

When a pilot suffers a heart attack at 35,000 feet, a commercial airliner filled with passengers crashes into a nuclear power plant in the small town of Waketa, Minnesota, which becomes ground zero for a catastrophic national crisis with global implications.

The International Nuclear Event Scale tracks nuclear disasters. It has seven levels. Level 7 is a Major Accident, with only two on record: Fukushima and Chernobyl. There has never been a Level 8. Until now.

In this heart-stopping thriller, ordinary people—power plant employees, firefighters, teachers, families, neighbors, and friends—are thrust into an extraordinary situation as they face the ultimate test of their lives. It will take the combined courage, ingenuity, and determination of a brave few to save not only their community and loved ones, but the fate of humanity at large.

Implausible Thriller

I had heard about the author's other two books and decided to start with this one first. I thought it would be interesting to see how a former flight attendant would handle a disaster. John Nance also writes some excellent thrillers, but he was a pilot and is a consultant, frequently on Air Disasters. Worst Case Scenario was a great fictional thriller. Parts of it were on the money, especially the disaster on the plane. The rest was implausible but entertaining. The town coming together was wonderful, but them being left alone is a stretch. I read too much Crichton, Clancy and Preston and Child for that to be believable. The personal stories got confusing with so many people and not much background. It had a fast pace. Joe Morton did a great job on narrating the audiobook.

Fast pace realistic edge of your seat story

I could not put this down. It was very good. Great characters, the flight scene was very well done. I’ve flown enough to have emergencies from time to time. Thus the flight seemed so believable. The manner in which the community came together is like the small town America I currently live in. And yes people are really there to help you when people are in need. I can’t wait for the movie.

Not Falling but typical TJ suspense

This is just a wonderful audio read. I loved Falling for it's non-stop suspense and wonderful good guy and bad guy characters. With WCS the enemy was a nuclear power plant disaster. For me it's a bit harder to hate the power plant much less the situation our heroes are placed in. I think in real life the Federal response would have much more robust with agencies like the USCG already on hand at the bridges and divers and a slew of professional experts deployed in minutes after the crash. This would have ruined the small town local heroes responsive involvement less critical to the story but more believable. That said TJ Newman never fails to add just the right amount of tension and bravado to keep you on the seat of your pants interested. I would read anything by TJN and have done so in her previous stories.

Edge of your seat ✈️

Another good book by TJ. Falling is still my favorite but this was really good too. Heartbreaking and engaging story of a plane that crashes near a nuclear power plant. This story will draw you in and keep you on your toes the entire time.

How A Narrator Can Kill An Amazing Book

NUCLEAR is pronounced new-clear. After the 20th or 30th time hearing the narrator pronounce it as new-cue-lar, I almost turned it off and demanded a refund from audible.

That said, the story is excellent. The narration is not good.

Catastrophe Laden Tale

Predictable story but engaging. Frankly too many, seemingly never ending obstacles for the characters to overcome. So going for poignant. The narration for the first few chapters was delivered in a staccato way which was a bit distracting. Although the narrator is an accomplished actor, it took too many chapters in before the delivery seemed less “acted” and more presentation of the story. However I did finish the book and enjoyed the results.
