Dead or alive?

Not a hard question, and pretty easy to figure out either way. Usually.

Except I've somehow woken up in a place called Hell, and I'm not entirely sure I died first.

I thought it was a practical joke. Until a warrior woman tried to kill me and I rescued an elf and a succubus from slavers. Then I started to realize something strange was going on. I didn't know the half of it.

Turns out, this Hell is being terrorized by an evil wraith king, and he’s hell-bent on bringing all of Hell under his dominion. He also happens to control the portal back to our world, which I very much want to use.

So here I am, preparing for battle against an army of 10,000 wraiths, Hellhounds, and sorcerers.

If we win, Hell might be changed forever.

But the chances of that are achingly slim.

Wraith King is a medieval portal fantasy containing medieval warfare and warrior females who find Jon to be different from the men of their world. And while Jon finds himself having more fun in Hell than he would have imagined, the dangers are real, with blood, violence, and epic battle scenes galore.

Learning the hard way.

An MC who has to learn the hard way that the new world he's in has different sensibilities, his mistakes have consequences but in the end developed into a great hero. A great start.

Duet narration re-release of a medieval fantasy

As required by U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulations and Audible.com requirements, I am disclosing that I was given a free review copy of this audiobook at my request. I have listened to the audiobook, and I have voluntarily left an honest review. Receiving a review copy did not influence my rating nor my review.

“Wraith King” was initially released two and a half years ago with a solo narrator (Chris Graves). The audiobook has been re-released with duet narration. Melanie Hastings does an absolutely fantastic job. TJ McKenzie effected an odd (to me) accent, which took awhile to get used to. I’d previously listened to his narration of Apocalypse Core, and I preferred the voice he used for that book. Interestingly, TJ is the announcer for each chapter change, and he uses his “normal” voice for those. So TJ uses Wraith King as an opportunity to show he can do multiple male voices; not a bad thing for a voice actor.

The story follows MC Jon after he awakes in a medieval world replete with non-humans. There’s an evil necromancer who, during the course of his centuries of power, has transformed the world from a lush, green paradise to one actually called “Hell”. Jon frees a succubus and an elf from slavers, earning their gratitude and lust. Jon vacillates between wanting to find a way to return to New Jersey, and wanting to help his new friends and the last stronghold of free elves defeat the evil necromancer. Now, personally, I’ve been to New Jersey, so staying to help the elves would be an easy choice for me. J/K…J/K….no hate mail, please!!!

The plot does sound similar to many other isekai adventures, but given that the story was published on Kindle in July of 2019 I credit the author with writing something rather unusual and creative for the time!

Wraith King has held up well as a story and I’m glad that the new audiobook treatment gives it the modern polish it deserves. Book 2 is currently available as an audiobook, and I’m looking forward to Jon, Ilana (the succubus) and Nya (the elf) enjoying their night camping as they march to save elf guard Syn from her captors! There’s a total of four books available on Kindle, and I hope they all get some audio love. 5* for Wraith King.

what would happen if you woke up in hell?

This is a great story about a Man that gets beaten up and wakes up dead in hell. he tries to understand the situation and figure out what to do next. he struggles at first, but handles himself well. The narration is excellent and Melanie is outstanding.

big fan of this author and narration duet

I think this is the 4th book I've listened to with this author and narration team and I have to say I'm a fan. I think the author comes out with some pretty original ideas and the narrators help bring it to life. if you don't no about the goddess melanie hastings, give the heartstone saga a spin. tj holds his own with hastings and that says alot. although, i missed his Canadian accent in this one. this book was fun and fast and upon leaving this review i see audible is already recommending me the second book, due out in Feb. that's a done deal on my opinion.

Really Good Book 1

This book has started off the series really well in my opinion. Definitely a unique take on the isekai genre that I honestly really enjoyed. I have really enjoyed the works of Jack Porter and this book was no different. There is a good story, interesting and unique characters and it all comes together nicely in a story that kept me listening the whole way through.

The narration by TJ McKenzie and Melanie Hastings was great. I think this narration duo for this story was the perfect choice.
