Publisher's summary

Rooted in her experiences growing up in an evangelical Christian family, Jamie Lee Finch’s You Are Your Own offers an overview of evangelicalism and the painful confusion and anxiety experienced under its demands.

Finch explores the mechanisms of trauma and how fundamentalist denominations match the patterns connected with PTSD. She elaborates on the doubt, guilt, fear, and grief that haunt those leaving the evangelical faith and offers an approach to help them recover healthy self-worth and resilience.

A socio-historical autobiographical analysis of evangelical Christianity's religious trauma, You Are Your Own emerges from Finch's reconnaissance on her own life - her journals, stories, trauma - and offers advocacy for everyone harmed by fundamentalist faith.

Jamie Lee Finch is a sexuality and embodiment coach, intuitive healer, self-conversation facilitator, sex witch, and poet. You can learn about Jamie’s work at JamieLeeFinch.com

The Perfect Intro to Deconstruction from Evangelicalism

This book has been so eye opening. It’s helped explain to me the 20+ years of physical pain and migraines I’ve dealt with. It’s given a reason for the tension and shame I’ve carried in my body all my life. And it’s given me a starting point for my deconstruction journey out of the faith system I was raised in. Thank you, thank you. I can’t wait for your next book. ♥️

Great overview and summary of my life and so many others

This book hit on SO much of my childhood and subsequent messed-up adulthood. I’m only just beginning to uncover all the damage done in my religious life at 46 and hope this book helps others in our situation begin to heal.
For those for whom this book doesn’t resonate, know that within this topic are soooo many differently nuanced and blatant versions of such experiences, varying sometimes greatly based on which church/school you attend, how old you are, what you were allowed to do growing up, etc. But the gist of it is universal and timeless… Well-intended or not, manmade interpretations of a text and/or a belief can tragically and deeply wound a young child who will go on to have a less than ideal or healthy/happy life if they never have a chance to unlearn and rid themselves of all the garbage dumped on them for years and years.

I AM my own! Thank you, Jamie, for your part in helping me realize that!

This book has changed my life

I started my deconstruction about 5yrs ago, i just didn't fully understand what i was going through or doing thenm
This past year i have started becoming more & more aware of my experiences growing up in an abusive home & how it is still affecting me today. Thank you for the personal perspective of this book, it really showed me i am not alone.

Telling account

This is a telling account of how one girls life was dramatically impacted by conservative fundamentalist doctrine. While I don't agree with her on all counts, there was much of her story I could relate to.

I relate so much

This book gave an honest look at the rubble under purity culture… our bodies. Physical health is linked to our mental/emotional/spiritual health. The book did a great job at explaining the effects of religious trauma without being graphic or activating for my PTSD girlies.

RTS

Excellent look into evangelicalism and the trauma that it has bestowed on several generations but it's now being recognized as a departure from the Divine

Wonderful, everything I needed

I picked up this audio book to listen to while I'm working. almost everything she went through was a direct mirror of my life, minus the abusive mother. I love the looks into the psychology behind how these things affect us. I never thought there was a word for what I was experiencing and right here it is. Thank you!

this book tells the truth with so much clarity, and research that goes deeper into the topics of purity culture and white evangelism. it was very powerful for me to read, and I'm so grateful. I feel so heard.
