You and the Music Business: Empowering Independent

For any singer-songwriter, producer, or instrumentalist, the journey to success often seems like a confusing melody, with highs that inspire and lows that can bring even the strongest to their knees. Shannon brilliantly illustrates the current music ecosystem, giving readers an intimate view of the joys and struggles of being an indie. It's not just about bearing the label; it's about understanding the weight it carries.

Perhaps one of the most invaluable segments of the audiobook is the depth she goes into on the three stages of the creative cycle. Shannon provides not just knowledge but actionable strategies on how artists can change their mindset to enhance their fanbase, turning listeners into loyal followers.

What is particularly commendable is Shannon's approach to treating music as a business. She emphasizes that, at its core, the music industry is about connections – how your music resonates with people. This perspective is refreshing and ensures artists stay true to their craft while being commercially viable.

For many, industry jargon can be a maze, and Shannon provides a stellar 101 on this, helping artists avoid pitfalls and common traps. This is especially useful for those looking to surround themselves with a team. Her insights on what questions to pose before onboarding a manager, booking agent, or producer, coupled with the red flags to be wary of, are crucial.

A must read; valuable advice; inspirational

I can't think of enough positive things to say about this book!! It is so well written and well performed that it is fun to listen to. In fact, it feels like sitting down to coffee with a friend and ally- except it offers way more knowledgable and practical advice about breaking into the music business than a friend would ever have! There are so many golden nuggets about the music business from the inside, but also grounded advice about believing in yourself and being real with yourself about your motivations, intentions, and passions. I think I will count it as a therapy session as well as a blue print for buildind a business around music because this advice truly applies to life in general. Full of valuable guidance, this book is a great read (listen) and will inspire you to define and create your own path through the music business, if you so desire.

Great for many reasons

This book is great for anyone in any business! While Tara Shannon focuses on the music business, this book really can be applied elsewhere as well! Reviewing aspects of business, and money (chapter Money, Money, Money..) is fantastic she also reviews the “why”. Self reflection and looking inward is explained so well. The emotional check in at the end helps empower the reader to feel and acknowledge what they are feeling in the present. Well done. This would be a great gift for anyone considering music as a hobby or a career!
