About this listen

This program was previously published as Minority Leader. This updated edition includes a new preface written and read by Stacey Abrams.

"Abrams's own grit, coupled with her descriptions of much stumbling and self-doubt, will make [Lead from the Outside] touch you in a way few books by politicians can." (The New York Times)

National leader Stacey Abrams has written the guide to harnessing the strengths of being an outsider and succeeding anyway.

Leadership is hard. Convincing others - and yourself - that you are capable of taking charge and achieving more requires insight and courage. Lead from the Outside is the handbook for outsiders, written with an eye toward the challenges that hinder women, people of color, the working class, members of the LGBTQ community, and millennials ready to make change.

Stacey uses her hard-won insights to break down how ambition, fear, money, and failure function in leadership, and she includes practical exercises to help you realize your own ambition and hone your skills. Lead from the Outside discusses candidly what Stacey has learned over the course of her impressive career in politics, business, and the nonprofit world: that differences in race, gender, and class provide vital strength, which we can employ to rise to the top and create real and lasting change.

It is a power packed review of how to lead and the trepidations of leading from outside to inside. Learning and being truthful when mistakes are made letting honest lead the way. Recognizing your strong points how to embellish and know when to admit failure and mistakes, adjust and rewind, replenish and readjust and when you don’t know something ask, research, and replenish. I find however their is little of personal impact of how this all affected her life from the outside but here is a woman of great love and sacrifice for her family, friends and country. She is very proud of the accomplishments and character of her family from their successes as well as failures. Giving of herself also in the sense that she shares everything of her career’s trials from failures to successes to empower others. Thank you Stacy for sharing it is an extremely resourceful tool to you in coming a better leader.

Education for me, as a permanent resident, on the quest to understanding the political culture of this country beyond the obvious need to move towards a multi-party (i.e. more than 2) system.

I don’t usually do "self-help books," but was intrigued to learn about Stacey Abrams journey to leadership. Not a small feat to make it so close to winning the governorship over a southern state as a black woman. Very glad I chose differently. Also glad that she was the one to read it. Voice is pleasant, she reads and speaks in ways that are both engaging and with particular clarity. But I guess that also has to do with the writing. She covers many of the leadership lessons I now know but wish this book had been available much earlier in my career. For that reason, I highly recommend it for young people on the start of the leadership journey. Particularly people of color and those typically on the margins of all kinds of power arenas.

This book audio book was a breath of fresh air. It's great to see that some politicians remain honest and is doing the best for the people. She's very intelligent and I wouldn't mind her being President.

In short, accessible chapters with personal and case study stories as rich illustration, Abrams lays out a case and a thinking process for anyone carrying a marginalized identity to consider formal leadership. Though the word “minority” is not one used in my circles, there are tips for folks across industry, and not just the political office-oriented. Exercises at the end of each chapter help concretize salient points in the reader’s own words.

I found myself listening to multiple sections more than once because the insight and descriptions were so rich. I've recommended it to several friends and may even include it in some of my teaching. this is such an awesome book.

I have become an admirer of Stacey Abram over the last several years. This book is a powerful tool for any person not in the majority - POC, women, LGBT folks - to learn how to navigate the world successfully as a "minority" leader.

A must read for any minority leader
