Hacking away at human nature

I have no doubt that Mel Robbins' approach works for a lot of people but it doesn't speak to me. I don't understand how you can do something for 15 years (like her yoga) and not find some way to love it. Most of the things she says she struggles with, I learned to control sometime in my 20s. What I'm looking for is help with the big scary stuff. You know, financial, medical, the works. Maybe she gets there later. In the meantime, though, I don't subscribe to the Puritanical face-off of good vs. good for you. That's the BS that's crippled our culture, and she's just selling it in a new package. I need to conjure the good stuff I can anticipate when I open that door.

I understand what she’s try to say but all sounds so Joyless

Yes, we all need to parent ourselves and do stuff that is boring or annoying, but what about using a little mindfulness and find the joy in the activity, not just brute force to get through it? Hate exercise, maybe you love to ride a bike, walk, hike, ski, or even just acknowledge that it is hard at the time, but you can focus on how great you will feel once you start or afterwards. Unloading the dishwasher? It takes like 5-10 mins - set a timer and you’ll realize you can get it done in the time it takes to read a newspaper article but you’ll have a sense of satisfaction when it is finished. Good information but think it doesn’t honor understanding yourself and finding what is right for you. And I have heard that parenting, as she describes it, doesn’t teach kids to develop their own intrinsic motivation because they got used to it being extrinsic, directed by their parents. Sometimes can produce rebellious kids.

Mel Robbins being Mel Robbins.

Everyone doesn't feel like doning something sometimes. It's hard to get up early in the morning and go to the gym, school, church or wherever place you need to go to get your things done and, once there, take action. If you're waiting for the right moment, be aware that it's not coming. Taking charge of our lives is what this title teaches us.
