American Indians remain familiar as icons, yet poorly understood as historical agents. In 1791, General Arthur St. Clair led the United States Army in a campaign to destroy a complex of Indian villages at the Miami River in northwestern Ohio. Almost within reach of their objective, St. Clair's 1,400 men were attacked by about 1,000 Indians. My Life on the Plains by General George Armstrong Custer (1839-1876) is a historical document chronicling the Indian Wars of 1867-1869. It provides an account of army life during the expeditions and includes a detailed account of the winter campaign of 1868 against the Cheyenne.
