Robert C. Hickle
About this listen
This is the compilation of all five booklets written by Robert C. Hickle, written between 1976 to 1980. He reflects on his 40-plus years of experience counseling alcoholics, addicts, and their families; on the profession of addiction counseling, and on societal attitudes about alcoholism and addiction in general.
Each booklet is divided into short chapters with titles such as "Alcoholic Lie a Lot", "Psychic Pain", "Sober and in Trouble", and "Choices", among many others. All in a jargon-free, plain-speaking, down-to-earth style that reflects Bob's statement "I write like I talk".
Each booklet is also available separately on Amazon and in a shorter compilation of the first three booklets in volume 1 and the last two in volume 2. Everything is available in paperback, e-book, and audiobook formats.

Story
Bonds That Make Us Free is a groundbreaking book that suggests the remedy for our troubling emotions by addressing their root causes. You'll learn how, in ways we scarcely suspect, we are responsible for feelings like anger, envy, and insecurity that we have blamed on others. Even though we fear to admit this, it is good news. If we produce these emotions, it falls within our power to stop them. But we have to understand our part in them far better than we do, and that is what this remarkable book teaches.

Story
To grow in recovery, we must grow up emotionally. This means getting honest with ourselves and facing up to the self-defeating thoughts and actions that put our sobriety at risk. Although there are as many ways to mess up recovery as there are alcoholics and addicts, some general themes exist, which include: confusing self-concern with selfishness; not making amends; using the program to try to become perfect; not getting help for relationship troubles; and believing that life should be easy. Allen Berger explores the 12 most commonly confronted beliefs and attitudes that can sabotage recovery.

Story
Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross created her classic seminal work, On Death and Dying, to offer us a new perspective on the terminally ill. It is not a psychoanalytic study, nor is it a "how-to" manual for managing death. Rather, it refocuses on the patient as a human being and a teacher, in the hope that we will learn from him or her about the final stages of life.
