About this listen

It is estimated that as many as 34 million people grew up in alcoholic homes. But what about the rest of us? What about families that had no alcoholism, but did have perfectionism, workaholism, compulsive overeating, intimacy problems, depression, problems in expressing feelings, plus all the other personality traits that can produce a family system much like an alcoholic one?

Countless millions of us struggle with these kinds of dysfunctions every day, and until very recently we struggled alone. Pulling together both theory and clinical practice, John and Linda Friel provide a listenable explanation of what happened to us and how we can rectify it.

Where does Adult Children rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

My favorite book thus far. Any fan of Alice Miller must listen to this book.

The body never lies - alice miller

Any additional comments?

I identified incredibly with their stories. Their observations and thoughts allowed me to recognize many aspects of my childhood as abusive and heavily dysfunctional. I had a lot of anger and resentment for what felt like a lost childhood from absentee parents but had trouble identifying how exactly I experienced the abuse. This book allowed me to identify the abuse and gave me much needed confirmation of my feelings. Thank you

An unbelievable book that will change your life

What made the experience of listening to Adult Children the most enjoyable?

This isn't some hokey book for saps. It's informative and brings concepts to everyday language and also metaphor. This is the first I've read on the subject, but I feel it's a very important one. Give it a try if this is something in your life.

Easy to read for anyone

Even if you don't think the content of this book relates to you, or that reading it will "help", I hope you'll read it/listen to it anyway. Even if the experiences, studies, and methods aren't a revalation for you, they may help someone you care about - and, having read it, you can best recommend it.
An excellent reading of a very important book.

I had a paperback as well as the audio book. I found that very useful to "read" the book quickly 1 day and a bit, and highlight the important bits to me.

A very well articulated book on recovery

The voice actor didn’t quite do it for me, but the variety of stories provided are thought provoking.

I liked it. It was both comforting and entertaining to listen to as the well experienced author spoke on the matters he has thorough knowledge of. Several references to other books as well as studies on the topic at hand. Overall structure was at times hard to follow, but content was good. Enjoy the read/listen. 🙂

Helpful in listening to such a needed discussion.
