About this listen

Nathan and his companions are free. For now. They're trapped inside the fortress-city of Halsmet, and every mage of Giantsrest is hunting for them.

Luckily enough, they've been found by Faline, the shapeshifting leader of the Assassins of Gemore. She's pledged to teach Nathan her deadly trade. How far will he go to fight the empire of slavers? How much murder is justified?

Even if they manage to win this fight against Giantsrest, it won't be the end of the conflict. A Questor from ages past lurks in the heart of the Ascendent Academy, and he won't allow Giantsrest to suffer a defeat.

It is time for Nathan to face his sworn enemy, to stand against the Ascendent Academy. But how can one person fight an empire of thousands?

A strong sequel to a strong sequel

Brilliant yet again. A strong sequel to a strong sequel. Nathan remains one of my favourite protagonists in the genre. I can't wait for book 4.

However, my one (tongue-in-cheek) criticism is: give Nathan Lark the boyfriend he deserves! Our bisexual king deserves love too.

Good set up book

Well written, it’s a set up for the next arc but still a great story and well written.

Great idea, nearly perfect execution.

I like it, but nothing is perfect.

I look forward to more works by you.

A Little Woke

The book was decent and continued inserting minor woke elements for no purpose to the story. Why can't authors just wrote good literature without inserting ideology?

Can't wait for the next one!

I love how the story progresses. I'm waiting patiently to learn more about the "Devrar". Nathan needs a mage slayer count!!

Bad ending

We all know he’s going to create another book but can’t authors at least try to create a coherent story for each book? It’s like they reach their word limit and just stop. Super annoying and not a good service to readers.

Good Story but Not Enough Resolved

The story and magic (or non magic system) is really interesting, and the author writes well, but not enough was resolved to be a third book. A good cliff hanger can be great but the ending just felt more like a mid way point of a book than an end of one.

Mostly a good continuation of the story

I like the direction the story is heading and the little more about the world that is revealed is mostly interesting. I would say overall this book is decent, but it feels like there is a lot of repetition that stood out as a little lazy and annoying for me; like, if I ever re-listen it will only be the key chapters where the actual action is happening.

Part of that repetition is the skills descriptions, but mostly it’s the overuse of the same few phrases throughout all of the dialogue; it’s enough to undermine any weight or emphasis they are meant to give to the characters’ words. Surely even people in a world of repeated endings have more than 4 or 5 ways of expressing themselves in a conversation.

Books are getting shorter with more filler

1st book was phenomenal, but this book had 1 hour of status review sheets, useless filler and is over 4 hours shorter than the first book.
